Behavior of Self-Compacting Concrete with Different Fineness Moduli of Fine Aggregate

Abstract

The main objective of the present paper is to investigate the effect of fineness moduli (FM) of fine aggregate on fresh properties (flow ability. Passing ability and segregation resistance), and hardened properties (compressive strength, split tensile strength, flexural strength and ultrasonic pulse velocity UPV) of self-compacting concrete (SCC). Four values of FM 2.3, 2.5, 2.7 and 3.1 were used, according to acceptance range of ASTM C33-03 for FM for fine aggregate, which recommended range for FM is 2.3 to 3.1._x000D_ Four series of mixes were casting , each series consist of two mixes represent normal strength and high strength SCC, each series of mixes made from fine aggregate have the same FM. Flow ability, passing ability.and segregation resistance of fresh SCC, both with normal and high strength decreases with increasing the fineness moduli. High strength SCC more effected than normal strength concrete due to increase the volume of particles.   _x000D_ Great enhancement in compressive strength split tensile strength and flexural strength in both normal and high strength SCC when the FM is 2.5. Increase FM to 2.7 and 3.1 not lead to increase in strengths. The UPV values of normal and high strength SCC mixes have a good general condition. SCC mixes with FM 2.5 possess excellent general conditions.

Abstract

Rigid pavement slabs are erected on a prepared subgrade or foundation layer, providing a hard and continuous surface. Transverse joints made of dowel bars connect them, and longitudinal joints made of tie bars join them longitudinally. This study is an investigation of the impact of soil strength and concrete parameters on the effectiveness of dowel bars in rigid pavements. Moreover, three parameters were examined; California Bearing Ratio (CBR), concrete compressive strength and slab thickness. The analysis was conducted using the Ever FE program and focused on several axle configurations applied to the joint. The results indicate inverse association between the pavement slab thickness and the concrete strength, under the assumption of consistent soil strength. Moreover, an assortment of reduced shear forces on the dowel bars is seen when the soil strength values increase. It indicates that soil strength has a greater impact on the shear load of dowel bars compared to the qualities of concrete. Additionally, the type of axles used and the magnitude of soil strength were shown to have a significant effect on the shear load.

Abstract

Structural elements. This means the structural behavior can be quantified by considering the behavior of each structural element in each load path. Concrete is a material known for its great strength. Regardless, there are a few weaknesses, which must be taken in consideration in the design of concrete structural elements. Basically, concrete is made of three main ingredients: Portland cement, water, and aggregates (sand and stone).In order to improve tensile strength and ductility (capacity to stretch and deform prior to failure) in concrete, so this paper discus some types of concrete and record the effect on beams. Reactive powder concrete (RPC) is an actual concrete mixture, it is a special type of concrete because mix concrete (coarse and fine aggregate ) replaced by fine sand size (150-400)µm. In the experimental comparison the mechanical properties( compressive , splitting tensile and flexural )strength of plain RPC and high and normal strength concrete. Each set consisted of (4) cubes of (100×100×100_mm, (8) cylinder of (150×300mm) and (4) prism of (100x100x500) mm and consisted of (4) beam of (1000×100×400)mm. The results shown that the maximum compressive strength is 107 MPa and the maximum splitting tensile 9 MPa of RPC comparison high and normal strength concrete. The result of the second part shown increased RPC reinforced concrete the firstcrack288 MPa and ultimate crack 380MPa comparison high and normal strength concrete and the mode of failure of RPC (flexural-shear).

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to investigate how the fiber orientation and loading axis of a composite material affect its behavior. Consideration was given to two different fiber-to-matrix ratios in order to improve the mechanical properties. Hand lay-up samples were produced in accordance with ASTM D790 for flexural testing. On UTM, tensile and flexural tests were performed on the sample. The effect of fiber orientation modifies the composites' mechanical properties. As the fiber orientation increased, the tensile strength of the composite would reduce. This carbon/epoxy composite test demonstrates better strength than those conducted at (30, 5, 60, and 90 degrees). For flexural tests, a three-point bend at 30 degrees demonstrates excellent strength. Utilizing the three-point bend method, the flexural strength and flexural modulus have been determined. The tensile strength, young's modulus, elongation percentage, maximum load to break the composite, peak load, and flexural strength of single- and double-layered carbon fibers were compared and examined. As the number of layers increased, the adhesion between layers of epoxy and fiber carbon, and glass fiber weakened, causing a decrease in almost all mechanical properties. The fabricated 2024-T3 and epoxy glass fiber had higher fatigue strength than aramid reinforced and lower density than steel alloy utilized in aircraft manufacture.

Abstract

In this work chopped carbon fibers are used to improve tensile strength of Porcelanite lightweight aggregate concrete. Silica fume was added in order to improve the mixes compressive strength. Silica fume increase water demand and using fibers reduce workability, to improve workability and decrease water demand high rang super plasticizers are used. The results showed that compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, modulus of elasticity of carbon fibers Porcelanite lightweight aggregate concrete increase with increasing of carbon fiber up to 2% compared to reference Porcelanite lightweight aggregate concrete without fibers. The percentages of increasing were 14.40%, 68.00%, and 10.66% for compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, and modulus of elasticity, respectively.  Flexural Strength continues in increase with increase of fibers. The dry unite weight of mixes with chopped fiber decrease with increase of fiber percentage. Besides the chopped carbon improved the ductility of Porcelanite lightweight aggregate concrete and that clear from stress-strain relationship.

Abstract

A tack coat is a minimal coating of asphalt cement, cut-back asphalt, or asphalt emulsion to an existing pavement surface between layers to guarantee proper bonding between the two layers and longitudinal and transverse joints. Numerous researchers have assessed interlayer adhesion employing failure-mode behavior tests, such as pull-off, direct shear, and torsion testing. This study aims to quantify the best tensile resistance obtained using three types of cutback asphalt (RC70, RC800 modified with polymer 4.5% & MC70). All are applied on concrete surfaces at a rate of 0.5 L/m². The Proceq DYNA Z16 pull–off tester is used to measure the tensile strength at a rate of 0.25 kN/s. It is found that the average tensile strength of the tack coat materials is (0.319, 0.138, 0.028) MPa, respectively. It is concluded that RC70 has the maximum tensile strength. Also, the different types of solvent affect adhesion strengths; RC70 was Prepared using gasoline, while MC70 used petroleum. Gasoline has greater volatility and thus increased adhesion. Failure strength modes of interior bonding varied between cohesive failure adhesive and adhesive failure.

Abstract

Glass is an inert material which could be used and recycled many times. Several tons of waste glass (WG) are generated annually worldwide due to the rapid growth of the population and improvement in the standard of living. In this study, the WG was used and supplied with three different particle sizes; 600?m, 2.36 mm and 4.75mm and partially weight replaced of fine aggregate at ratios 10%, 20% and 30%. The effectiveness of that changes on compressive strength and modulus of rupture at ages 28 and 90 days for concrete specimens produced were studied. The results showed that compressive and modulus of rupture at all ages increased along with addition of WG as glass powder (GP). Moreover, the specimens containing 30% of GP replaced has the best results, also it is found at this percentage of GP, more beneficial and capable to increased compressive and flexural strength up to 18.64% and 5.87 % respectively at 28-day compared to reference specimen. Besides, the test results revealed that at a replacement level 10% of 2.36mm fine glass (FG) has slightly improved the strength characteristics. While, the results demonstrated decreasing in that properties for the concrete specimens contained on coarse glass (CG) up to 4.75mm. The maximum negative effect on compressive strength and modulus of rupture recorded at the ratio 30% of CG where was the reduction in compressive strength 28.52% opposite 22.12% for modulus of rupture at age of 28-day. From that results, it can be concluded that the effect of FG was little compared to GP.

Abstract

This paper presents a simple strut and tie model to calculate the shear strength of reinforced concrete deep beams. The proposed model assumes that the shear strength is the algebraic sum of three strength components: concrete diagonal strut, vertical stirrups, and horizontal web reinforcements. The contribution of each strength components was calibrated with the test results of 305 deep beams compiled from previous studies with wide range of geometrical and material properties. The predictions of the proposed model were compared with those of the current codes of practice (ACI-318-14 and ASHTOO 2014) and those of existing model in the literature. Comparisons revealed that the proposed model provided better predictions than other models. The mean of predicted strength to test of the proposed model, the ACI-318-14 model, the ASHTOO 2014 model were 0.98, 0.79, and 0.75, respectively. The corresponding standard deviations were 0.17, 0.28, and 0.49, respectively.

Abstract

This paper presents experimental investigations to study the behavior of High Strength Reinforced Concrete (HSRC) deep beams with web openings under monotonic and static repeated loading conditions. The experimental work procedure consisted of testing eighteen simply supported HSRC deep beams both with and without web openings. The numerical work procedure consisted of testing ten simply supported HSRC deep beams both with web openings. All beams had the same dimensions and flexural reinforcement. They had an overall length of 1400 mm, a width of 150 mm and a height of 400 mm. The investigated test parameters were concrete compressive strength, shape and size of openings, vertical and horizontal reinforcement ratios, shear span to effective depth ratio (a/d ratio) and loading history. The experimental results reveal that the ultimate load capacities for specimens tested under four different repeated loading regimes decrease in the range between 2% and 19% in regards to the control specimens which were tested under monotonic loading regime.  The results indicated that the increase in the severity of loading history leads to a decrease in the ultimate shear strength of the deep beams and causes increases in their ductility ratio. The ultimate loads of HSRC deep beams with square web openings size of (50*50mm, 60*60mm and 70*70mm) tested under the repeated loading history (HS-1) which consisting of five phases decreased by (11.4 %, 24.1% and 26.3 %, respectively)  compared to that of identical solid deep beam. The ultimate load of HSCR deep beam with circular web openings shape tested under repeated loading history (HS-1) increases by 8.6 % compared to the equivalent square web openings shape. For numerically analyzed beams under repeated loading history (HS-1), the ultimate load increases by 16% when using area of 2500mm2 of circular web openings shape (equal in area to square web opening size 50mm*50mm) and by 13.5% when using rhombus web openings shape of the dimensions 50*50mm in comparison with the case of 60-mm size square web openings.

Abstract

In this work, waste glass powder from broken windows and plastic fibers from waste polyethylene terephthalate bottles are utilized to produce an economical self-compact concrete. Fresh properties (slump flow diameter, slump Flow T50, V. Funnel, L–Box), mechanical properties (Compressive strength and Flexural strength) and impact resistance of self-compact concrete are investigated. 15% waste glass powder as a partial replacement of cement with five percentages of polyethylene terephthalate plastic waste were adopted: 0% (reference), 0.5%, 0.75%, 1%, 1.25% and 1.5% by volume. It seems that the flow ability of self-compact concrete decreases with the increasing of the amount of plastic fibers. The compressive strength was increased slightly with plastic fiber content up to (0.75%), about 4.6% For more than (0.75%) plastic fiber. The compressive strength began to decrease about 15.2%. The results showed an improvement in flexural strength and an impact on the resistance in all tested specimens’ content of the plastic fibers, especially at (1.5%) fibers.

Abstract

 Fused deposition modeling (FDM) is a commonly used 3D printing technique that involves heating, extruding, and depositing thermoplastic polymer filaments. The quality of FDM components is greatly influenced by the chosen processing settings. In this study, the Taguchi technique and artificial neural network were employed to predict the ultimate tensile strength of FDM components and establish a mathematical model. The mechanical properties of ABS were analyzed by varying parameters such as layer thickness, printing speed, direction angle, number of parameters, and nozzle temperature at five different levels. FDM 3D printers were used to fabricate samples for testing, following the ASTM-D638 standards, using the Taguchi orthogonal array experimental design method to set the process parameters. The results indicated that the printing process factors had a significant impact on tensile strength, with test values ranging from 31 to 38 MPa. The neural network achieved a maximum error of 5.518% when predicting tensile strength values, while the analytical model exhibited an error of 19.376%.

Abstract

Moisture-induced damage in asphalt pavements, is defined by adhesive failure at the binder-aggregate interface and decreased mechanical integrity, severely reduce pavement durability. The research examines the mechanical properties and moisture sensitivity of hot mix asphalt (HMA) enhanced with styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) polymer and including reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP). Laboratory assessments, including indirect tensile strength (ITS) and tensile strength ratio (TSR) tests, were performed on conventional HMA, SBS-modified HMA (4% SBS), and SBS-modified HMA contained 20% RAP. The results indicated that SBS modification significantly improved mechanical and moisture resistance properties, where unconditioned ITS specimens increased by 37.1% and TSR value enhanced by 13.5%. The incorporation of RAP decreased ITS value by about 21 % relative to pure SBS-modified HMA; nevertheless, the SBS+RAP combination still show higher ITS and TSR values than conventional HMA.

Abstract

In this paper an experimental works conducted to study the behavior of R.C. beam with large web opening at different locations and fortified with reactive powder composite (RPC) at the extreme tension zone (bottom edge of opening) and/or extreme compression zone (Top edge of opening). The experimental study is investigate the  behavior of twelve beams and study the ability of using normal strength concrete together with RPC in the same section to exploit the advantages of these two materials in optimal way. The main variables are RPC layers locations in tension zone and/or in compression zone and the locations of openings. The ultimate loads, load mid-span deflection behavior and strain for steel and concrete were discussed. The experimental results showed that the ultimate strength was decreased with increasing number of opening about 4% for beams with two openings located in shear zone and 21% for beams with three openings, thus indicating that the stiffness decreases accordingly. The using RPC layers effectively enhanced performance of hybrid beams when compared with using the normal strength concrete layers only. The using RPC layers in compression and tension zones increased the ultimate load about 47 % for beams with two opening located in shear zone, when using RPC in the tension zone and normal strength concrete in the compression zone the ultimate flexural load and ultimate deflection increase little compared with normal concrete.

Abstract

Unconfined compressive strength represents an important parameter for soil investigation report test results because the values of cohesion and allowable bearing capacity can directly obtained from the relevant test especially if the clayey soil layers are found at sufficient enough depth above water table level._x000D_ This paper deals with simple comparison (based on (31) soil samples) between unconfined compressive strength (qu) obtained by using the pocket soil penetrometer tool and the unconfined compressive strength using the conventional test for the same sample penetrated by the pocket penetrometer with different soil moisture contents. Two triaxial specimens, sample type-1- with dimensions 38 X 79mm and type-2- with dimensions 33 X 79mm(diam. X height)) prepared in the libratory._x000D_ It was found that the results refers that soil pocket penetrometer readings are closed enough to the results that obtained from the unconfined compression test result with certain conditions._x000D_ The average percentage of difference between penetrometer readings and unconfined compression test result values was (1.103%) for sample type-1- and (1.53%) for sample type -2-._x000D_ The maximum moisture content for all tests samples was (27.3%) and the minimum was (14.7%) while the average moisture content was(20.9%).

Abstract

Bio-cement built on microbial induced carbonate precipitation MICP, be able to consolidate the loose grains and can applied for soil reinforcement. In this study, the performing of an ureolytic Sporosarcina Pasteurii for sand stabilization was estimated. The S. Pasteurii Could effectively consolidates sand particles through urea hydrolysis and the successive production of calcite. The bio improved sands had relative great compressive strength after 60 days exposure to bacterial cells injections cycles. The compressive strength of bio stabilized sands was reliant on the utilized cell concentrations and density of urea and CaCl2. High bacteria cell masses decreased the compressive strength. The optimal density of cell, was OD600 0.5, when cost and performance were taken into account. The study shows that bio cementation of sand built on microbial induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) has ability for the reduction of sand permeability through pore clogging with precipitated carbonate.

Abstract

Normal concrete is weak against tensile strength, has low ductility and also insignificant resistance to cracking. The addition of diverse types of fibers at specific proportions can enhance the mechanical properties as well as the durability. Discrete fiber, which is commonly used, have many disadvantages such as balling the fiber, random distribution, and limitation of the used Vf ratio. Based on this vision, a new technique was discovered, enhancing concrete by textile-fiber to avoid all the problems mentioned above. This paper presents all important consequence and conclusions obtained from previous studies on how to strengthen concrete with two-dimensional and three-dimensional textile-fibers, and focuses on the flexural behavior of concrete members. The results indicate that there was an improvement in flexural strength, deformation capacity, and toughness with different load conditions when using different types of textile-fiber. It was observed that the effect of textile-fibers would increase when this fiber was coated by epoxy. In TRC system, there is a significant impact on the number of textile-fiber layers used.

Abstract

The aim of this work is to investigate the effect of soil corrosion on the critical buckling load of circular columns made of 2014-T4 aluminum alloy. In this work, 24 specimens were used and buried in the soil for 120 days. The samples divided into two groups (12 columns with corrosion before shot penning (SP) and ultrasonic impact treatment (UIT), and 12 columns with corrosion after combined surface treatments (SP+UIT)). The experimental1results revealed1that the corrosion negatively1affects the mechanical properties1of the material, and the1reduction percentage (R%) for1ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and1yield strength (YS) was (1.95% and 4.57%) respectively. After combined surface treatments (SP+UIT) for the corroded columns, the ultimate1tensile strength (UTS) and yield1strength (YS) were improved with (2.42%, and 2.87%) respectively. Perry-Robertson, Rankine, and ANSYS were used to estimate the critical buckling load (Pcr) and compare it with the experimental results. Rankine and Perry's formulas have been achieved a good agreement with the experimental without and with (1.5) factor of safety respectively. While ANSYS gave satisfactory prediction with a safety factor of (2.2, and 2.7) and (1.9, and 2.7) for long and intermediate columns before and after (SP+UIP) respectively.

Abstract

This work covers mixing of unsaturated polyester (un- polyester) with starch powders as polymer blends and study the effects of irradiation by UV-acceleration on mechanical properties of its. The unsaturated polyester was mixing by starch powders at particle size less than (45 µm) at selected weight fraction of (0, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5 and 3%). These properties involve ultimate tensile strength, modulus of elasticity, elongation percentage, flexural modulus, flexural strength, fracture toughness, impact strength and hardness. The results illustrate decrease in the ultimate tensile strength at and elongation percentage, while increasing modulus of elasticity, with increasing the weight ratio of starch powder to 3 % weight fraction, whereas the maximum value of hardness and flexural, impact properties happened at 1 % weight fraction for types of polymer blends.

Abstract

This paper focused on evaluating the effect of aggregate gradation and polymer modification on indirect tensile strength (ITS) and the static stiffness for hot asphalt mixtures. In particular, data from ITS tests have been processed to obtain stiffness measurements through the application of Hondros theory. The results showed that fine mixtures had a better tensile strength by 26.3% than the coarse mixtures. The effect of compaction also was examined, the results showed that samples compacted with the Superpave gyratory compactor (SGC) had an enhancement in ITS by 36.58 and 23.1% in comparison with Marshall and roller compactor respectively. Polymer modifiers were used to estimate their effect on tensile strength, adding 4, 6, and 8% of Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene (SBS), which can rise the ITS by 3.2,6.14 and 13.3% of the non-modified asphalt mixture. Furthermore, using 4, 6, and 8 percent of SBS could increase static stiffness by 53.9, 209.6, and 302.4% respectively for roller compacted fine mixes and 58, 220, and 379.3% for SGC compacted mixes. Furthermore, SBS raised the stiffness modulus by 52.3, 188, and 295% for Marshall compacted mixes. Using hybrid modifier can improve the stiffness of the asphalt mixture. However, The results indicate that using 1, 2 and 3% polyvinyl chloride (PVC) can magnify the stiffness of mixtures by 41.2, 199.8% and 262.6 for roller compacted mixtures and 133.4, 212.1 and 354% for SGC compacted mixtures, whereas there is a stringent increasing by 133.4, 189.2 and 354% for Marshall compacted mixes. Otherwise, polymer-modification can decrease the fracturing index for coarse and fine mixtures.

Abstract

Lightweight foamed concrete (LWFC) is characterized as a light in self-weight, self-compacting, self-levelling, and thermal and sound isolation. But it has low strength and low ductility which leads  that the application of  (LWFC)  in the building construction is limited. The flowability of the fresh mix of (LWFC) was evaluated by flow test. While the hardened properties of (LWFC) include, compressive6 strength, tensile6 splitting6 strength, flexural6 strength, and 6modulus of 6elasticity. This6 study6 focuses6 on the effect of the adding of silica fume and steel fibre on the mechanical properties of  (LWFC). Silica fume was added as (5%) and (10%) by the weight of cement  and steel fiber (0.2%) and (0.4%) of the total volume of the mix. The density of lightweight foamed concrete was 1800±50kg/ , and cement to sand ratio was (1:1) with water cement ratio (0.28). The results indicated that adding of silica fume6 and steel6 fiber6 have great effect on the mechanical properties and improve them. The addition (10%) of silica fume and (0.4%) by volume of steel fiber was the best ratio that improves the mechanical properties of the lightweight foamed concrete (LWFC). The pozzolanic index of the (5%) and (10%) silica fume was (21.9%) and (74.76%), respectively.

Abstract

Improving fatigue life is one of the most important issues in mechanical design; an investigation has been conducted on Al 2017-T4. Group of samples have been machined and prepared, some of specimens have been treated using the ultrasonic impact treatment (UIT) with one line peening. The fatigue tests were carried out under constant and variable amplitude (R=-1) at ambient temperature, in order to find out the fatigue life S-N curve and strength after treatment. It has been found significant increasing in strength after it was treated by (UIT).  The fatigue strength is improved after treatment up to 4.16% at 107 cycles, enhancement are present with 24% and 18.78% for the cumulative fatigue lives low-high and high–low respectively.  These results also show a strong tendency of increasing of fatigue strength after application of (UIT) with increase in mechanical properties of material used.

Abstract

This study involves the addition of nano silica (NS) with average particle size 12nm, micro high reactivity mitakaaolin (MHRM) particle size ? 0.554 ? 1.271 µm, micro ground granulated blast-furnace slag (MGGBFS) particle size ? 0.365 <2.932 µm and micro carbon fibers, the length of the fiber 8.5 mm and a diameter of 0.001 mm to cementations mixtures to investigate their effect on the impact strength with used magnetic water or normal water in mixing blends._x000D_ The results have shown that cementitious mixtures used in the mixing magnetic water containing 10% MGGBFS, 10% MHRM or 2.5% NS and reinforced with 2% micro carbon fiber have improved greatly in impact strength as the absorbed energy to the emergence of the first crack at age 28 days reaches to (231.55, 209.49 and 199.49) kN.m respectively, whereas for the reference cementitious mixtures it has been 1.574 kN.m

Abstract

This research is devoted to study the influence of different weight percent concerning to the additions of Ti and Cu on mechanical and tribological properties of AA6061. The composite materials consist of different weight percentage of Ti (0.2, 0.4, and 0.6) wt% and constant weight percentage of Cu (0.2) wt% which were fabricated by liquid metallurgy route technique. Microstructural characterization and phases have been examined by using SEM (scanning electron microscopic).SEM examination showed uniform distribution of nano Ti and Cu in AA6061. The consequences of mechanical tests demonstrated clear enhancement in mechanical properties, such as ultimate tensile strength, yield strength, young modulus, ductility% and hardness at additive percentage of 0.4% Ti+0.2%Cu nano particles incorporated into molten AA6061. Percentage of enhancement ultimate tensile strength is about 73.3%, yield strength about 82.7%, young modulus is about 21.2%, the  Vickers hardness about 42.6% and the decreasing in ductility was about 25.2% compared with the metal matrix (AA6061). The wear rate test was performed by using pin on disc rig for both hybrid nano composite and base metal (AA6061) under various loads (10,15and 20) N with sliding speed (1.282) m/sec at a (10) min’s time. The results showed a decrease in wear rate at 0.4%Ti+0.2%Cu compared with the base metal (AA6061). Improvement percentage of wear rate is about 105% at 20 N load.

Abstract

Gypseous soils are usually stiff when they are dry especially because of the cementation of soil particles by gypsum, but great loss in strength and sudden increase in compressibility occur when these soils are fully or partially saturated. The dissolution of the cementing gypsum causes high softening of soil. The problem becomes more complicated when water flows through the gypseous soil causing leaching and movement of gypsum. This study examines the improvement of gypseous soil properties using the Silicone oil to minimize the effect of moisture on these soils. This study was conducted on artificial gypseous soil (mixture of 30% Silber sand & 70 % Pure Gypsum) treated with silicone oil in different percentages. The reason for use the silicone oil as an additive to study the gypseous soil properties is due to the leakages of oil products from oil refinery in north of Iraq build on gypseous soil, this oil products infiltrate to the foundation soil of the refinery building facilities. _x000D_ The results showed that the Silicone oil is a good material to modify the basic properties of the gypseous soil of collapsibility and shear strength, which are the main problems of this soil and retained the soil by an appropriate amount of the cohesion suitable for carrying the loads from the structure.

Abstract

Construction joints are separations between successive concrete pours. They are critical in the building of large concrete structures, since these structures cannot be cast in a single pour. Self-consolidation concrete is a relatively new kind of concrete that is considered suitable for a wide range of construction applications, especially those needing a high early resistance. Certain findings from earlier experimental tests were adopted and analyzed using finite element analysis. ANSYS program was used to analyze the impact of utilizing high strength concrete (fc') and the secondary reinforcement ratio (ρv) on the behavior of reinforced self-consolidating concrete beams having a horizontal construction joint. Nine beams analyzed in this study have the same dimensions (150×180×1200) mm (width× height ×length). Between the two supports, the clear span was 1100 mm. Two-point loads were applied to the simply supported beams during testing. One of the beams acts as a control beam (without a construction joint) and the remaining beams were with horizontal construction joint in the tension zone. The ultimate loads obtained analytically vary by between 3.1% and 7.8 % from those found experimentally. The presence of the horizontal construction joints made the beam less stiff. Utilizing a 70 MPa high strength concrete resulted in a 47.4 % in ultimate load over the experimental value for regular strength concrete (28 MPa). Increasing the ratio of secondary reinforcement (0.01229 to 0.049) resulted in a 10.3% increase in ultimate load magnitude, while decreasing the ratio of secondary reinforcement (0.01229 to 0.0025) with spanning the spacing between stirrups led to a reduction in ultimate load magnitude by 55.8%.

Abstract

Reinforcement process of epoxy has been widely used to improvement of mechanical properties. Therefore, this work is concerned with the reinforcement of epoxy by adding natural materials (Pomegranate peel and Licorice particles) at epoxy. Different percentages of particles (5, 10, 15 and 20%) were used. The mechanical testing were included tensile, bending, hardness and impact tests. Hardness of epoxy was increased at increasing of Pomegranate peel (PP) and Licorice (L) percentages. Impact resistance of epoxy with Pomegranate peel (PP) has reached the highest at (10%), while with Licorice (L) has reached the highest at (5%). The results of tensile strength represent that increases of tensile strength at all percentages of (L), while (PP) showed that decreases at (5%) and increases at others percentage. Bending strength of epoxy has increased as increasing of (PP) at all percentage that used, but it has increased at (5, 10 and 20%) of (L), while it has dropped at (15%).

Abstract

Specimens with the structure of a face-centered cubic were produced using several sets of printing conditions. An experimental testing is conducted to carefully evaluate the microstructural analysis and compressive strength of this structure. The results include the measurement of mechanical properties, such as the peak stress. Fused deposition modeling is employed for the additive manufacturing of experimental specimens made from shape memory polymer thermoplastic polyurethane (MM-3520). We take into account the impact of printing factors on lattice structures, such as layer thickness, printing temperature, and printing speed. Analyzing the microstructure of the printed specimens exhibits that the specimens with highest printing temperature, lowest printing speed and thinner printing layer have better layers adhesion and lower porosities. All the mechanical tests are performed on specimens with the same structure and at a relatively constant density. Among the tested printing parameters, using a layer height of 0.1 mm, a printing temperature of 230 °C, and a printing speed of 20 mm/s yields the highest strength in the specimens. However, specimens printed with a layer height of 0.2 mm, a printing temperature of 220 °C, and a printing speed of 30 mm/s also exhibit good strength, albeit slightly lower than the maximum values. Additionally, when using these specific settings (0.3 mm – 210 °C – 40 mm/s), the mechanical qualities are minimized, yet the stress-strain curves exhibit characteristics similar to elastomers.

Abstract

This study aims to enhance the compression strength in one type of Pb-Sn-Sb alloys which wellknown by (Babbitt-ASTM B23 Alloy 13). The ?processing doing via equal channel angular extrusion technique. Three casting were implemented to ?manufacture the alloy; Chill Casting (CC), New Rheocasting (NRC) and Gravity Die Casting (GDC). The ?microscope examination shows that the microstructures contain two phases, ?-Pb and cubic shaped ?intermetallic compound (?-SbSn) in a matrix of ternary phases. CC was fine equiaxed as well as NRC, while ?in GDC was a dendrite ?-Pb phase with remaining ?-SbSn phase as a cubic shape. Higher mechanical properties in compression were recorded for Gravity die casting (12.7 %) while the NRC registered the highest value in yield strength (11.7 %). On the other hand, the casting techniques had a slight difference in Young's modulus. The other resulted data like hardness showed that NRC is the first reading (12.55 %)  and then gravity casting recorded as second score comparing with other (11.79 %), The results ?showed aslo that increasing forming temperature during angular extrusion has an adverse effect on compression ?strength. The study ?concluded that microstructural change caused by ECAP softens the material due to the break-up the original ?        precipitate and accelerate from the dynamic recrystallization.

Abstract

In this study a Nickel-Titanium-Cupper shape memory alloys was manufactured by powder metallurgy (PM) technique, powder mixture of 50% Ti , 47% Ni and 3% Cu was prepared by mixing for two hours and compacted in a press machine using various compacting pressure (600, 700 and 800) MPa , sample was then sintered for 5 hrs in an electrical tube vacuum furnace using sintering temperature of (850?C, 900?C and 950?C) .phase analysis of samples was conducted by X-ray diffraction test, the effect of different sintering temperature and compacting pressure on the porosity, microhardness ,compression strength and the shape memory effect (SME) was studied, the result showed decrease in the porosity and increasing in the shape recovery ,compression strength and microhardness with increasing compacting pressure and at lower sintering temperature and hence the best results was at 800MPa compacting pressure and 850?C sintering temperature.

Abstract

Open-graded-fraction-course (OGFC), is a hot asphalt mixture usually utilized as a private purpose wearing course, because of open graded asphalt mixture and aggregates skeleton (stone-on-stone) contact, it contain a relatively high air voids’ percentage, after compaction which are permeable to water. In this research one type of gradation was used (12.5 mm) NMAS, to preparing the OGFC asphalt mixtures, penetration grade 40/50, crushed aggregate, asphalt content prepared with 4 % and up to 6 % by weight of mixture with 0.5 % increments. Optimum asphalt content (OAC) was selected based on these criteria, air voids content, asphalt draindown, permeability, and abrasion resistance (aged and un-aged) condition. The mix performance had been investigated by indirect tensile strength and moisture susceptibility (sensitivity) measured according to the (AASHTO T283-14). Results illustrate that the increasing of asphalt binder content leads to a decrease of the air voids content, abrasion loss and permeability values, while draindown increase, conversely, the indirect tensile strength (ITS) had been significantly increased for both conditions and this is a gaod suggestion to resistance alongside moisture susceptibility. It can be decided that the increasing of asphalt  binder percent in OGFC asphalt mixture, leads to an increase in the thickness of binder coating around the aggregates. On the other hand, the influence of modifier that prepared with 4% styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) on OGFC asphalt mixture tends to improve the mix properties and exhibit higher (TSR) as compared with original asphalt by (31, 27.7 and 24.4) % at asphalt percent (4.8, 5.3 and 5.8) %, respectively. The SBS improved the adhesion between aggregate and asphalt which leads to reduce stripping of HMA, horizontal deformation, and increased the tensile stiffness modulus value.

Abstract

The composite opened web steel joist supported floor systems have been common for many years. It is economic and has light weight and can embed the electrical conduit, ductwork and piping, eliminating the need for these to pass under the member, consequently eliminate the height between floors. In order to study the joist strength capacity under the various conditions, it had been fabricated seven joists composed of the steel and concrete slab connected to the top chord by shear connectors (headed studs). These joist have 2820 mm length c/c of the supports and 235 mm overall depth. In the present study, six variable parameters are adopted (Studs distribution, Degree of shear connection, Degree of the web inclination, Shape of the web, Density of concrete for slab and length of the shear connector). The test results exhibited that minimum strength capacity was 160kN for light weight joist and maximum capacity was 225kN for joist of long shear connectors at failure. The results were compared by ultimate flexural model by Azmi.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to reduce weight and improve the mechanical properties of aircraft wing using Hybrid materials known as fiber metal laminates (FMLs). In this study, seven layers were used to produce the FMLs that consist of aluminum alloy2024-T3 reinforced by carbon and glass fibers bonded with blend of epoxy-resole. The Carbon Glass Reinforced Aluminum Laminates (CAGRALLs) was used as FMLs. The results showed that The CAGRALLs gave good mechanical properties because of increasing in tensile strength, elongation at fracture and impact toughness except flexural strength by comparing with other FMLs using commercial epoxy. The increasing in layers led to weaken adhesion force between layers of FMLs caused decreasing almost mechanical properties. The FMLs has good mechanical properties by using carbon and glass fibers by comparing with carbon and jute fibers. The CAGRALLs have higher numbers of cycles at failure under cyclic loadings than Aramid Reinforced Aluminum Laminates (ARALLs). The CAGRALLs have lower density by comparing with aluminum alloy 2024-T3 that used in manufacturing of aircraft wing.

Abstract

In this research the behavior of cylindrical shells under axial load have been studied. The experimental program is included two groups: the first consists of nine cylinders; each has a diameter of 150 mm, while the height varies from 100 to 500 mm and thickness of 1.5 mm, test results show that the optimum height to achieve the maximum strength is 300 mm with L/D equal to 2. The second group consists of two cylinders with diameter of 150 mm and height of 300 and 500 mm strengthened with stiffeners plate welding from inside at four quarters with thickness of 1.5 mm and width 20 mm fabricated from the same metal of the cylinders. After testing these two cylinders were gain an increase in the strength reached to 42% for 300 mm cylinder and 26.4% for 500 mm cylinder. The failure modes for these two groups are: the buckling at bottom like “elephant’s foot” for cylinders height from 100 to 300 mm and “inelastic buckling” for cylinders height from 350 to 500 mm for the first group, and the ” inelastic buckling” for the second group.

Abstract

Orthoses and prostheses were Chosen and laminated based on their high Yield, ultimate stresses, bending stresses, and fatigue limit. Response Surface Methodology (RSM) was utilized to find the best values for two parameters reinforcement perlon fiber and percent of Titanium Nanoparticle coupled with the matrix resin during optimization. The response surface methodology combined the expertise of mathematicians and statisticians to construct and analyze experimental models. Using this method, we identified 13 different lamination samples comprising a wide range of perlon number and Ti nano Wt% in their Perlon layer composition. All lamination materials defined by RSM methods and produced by a vacuum system were subjected to a battery of tests, with fatigue tests performed on the ideal laminating material in contrast to laminations created in the first study (Tensile test, Bending test, and Fatigue tests according to the ASTM D638 and D790 respectively). In comparison to the other 12 laminations tested using Design Expert version 10.0.2, the lamination with ten perlon layers and 0.75 percent Ti nano proved to be the strongest overall in terms of Yield, ultimate, and bending loads. This study used composite materials and titanium nanoparticles to characterize and fabricate ankle foot orthoses. Strength in bending should amount to about 70 MPa, around 85 MPa in tensile tension. Two empirical quadratic equations for the models of peak bending strength and maximum tensile stress with 95% confidence were created using the response surface approach and analysis of variance within the design of experiments software.

Abstract

One of the major usages for Al–Pb alloy are bearing alloys because of its lubricant behavior of Pb phase component. Applications of these alloys are in heavy duty, such as boring mills, presses, lathes, milling machines and hydraulic pump bushings. In present work, SiC powder was selected as additive for improving the mechanical properties of Al-Pb alloy that produced by mechanical alloying method. The percentage weight of SiC powder are (2.5, 5,10, 15 %) which mixing together with Al- Pb alloy for two hours in ball milling device, then compacted and sintering to obtain the improved alloy, and examine the mechanical properties (compressive strength and microhardness) of produced alloy. Results show that the additive of SiC powder on the Al-Pb alloy lead to improve the microhardness which increased with increased the percentage of additive, in the other hand, the compressive strength had a reverse effective with increased the percentage of SiC powder.

Abstract

This paper presents a comparison of using different techniques for stir spot welding of Aluminum 2024-T3, which are refill friction stir spot welding (RFSSW), edited (RFSSW-pin) and conventional friction stir spot welding (FSSW), depending on the obtained tensile shear strength property. Specimens were prepared from AA2024-T3 sheet for chemical analysis and mechanical tests. Workpieces were stir spot welded utilizing the above mentioned techniques at four rotational speeds (2000, 2500, 3000 and 4000 rpm) using tool pin diameters (5 and 7 mm) for conducting the tensile shear tests. The microhardness along the cross section of the welded specimens was conducted at the best conditions as well as the microstructure examination. The comparison results revealed that at the rotational speeds (2000 and 4000 rpm) in both cases of tool pin (5 and 7 mm), the ultimate tensile shear force was slightly higher than that for other speeds. However, the ultimate tensile shear force was found higher at 3000 rpm speed with a tool pin 7 mm. The microhardness results manifested a W-shape at the best conditions. Finally, the microstructure examination depicted the morphology of the main zones of the weld joint.

Abstract

In this paper, the cross section behavior of reinforced concrete columns made of normal and hybrid reactive powder concrete (hybrid by steel and polypropylene fibers) under concentric and eccentric vertical load was study. The casted columns were cured in two different type tap water for 28 days and chloride water for six months. Chloride salts with concentration was 8341.6 mg/l. Three variables were adopted in the experimental program; concrete type, curing type and the eccentricity of vertical load. Twenty (120x120x1200) mm columns were casted and tested depending on these variables. The different eccentricities were (0, 50,100 and 150) mm and where (e/h) were (0, 0.42, 0.83 and 1.25) respectively from the center of column, the other types of loading are tested the specimens as beam._x000D_ The experimental results showed increasing in ultimate load capacity and higher chlorides resisting for hybrid reactive powder concrete in comparison with normal concrete in both types of curing (tap and chloride water). Through studying load deflection, test results for Normal Strength Concrete (NSC) and Hybrid Fiber Reactive Powder Concrete (HFRPC) columns that deflection for columns cured in chloride water more than tap water when compared at the same load that also by increase eccentricity leads to an increase in deflection for both cured and The neutral axis depth for HFRPC columns is more than NSC at the same load also when eccentricity increases, the compression zone decreases and neutral axis also decrease by increase eccentricity. These results occur when columns are cured in tap and chloride water._x000D_

Abstract

This research studies the physical and mechanical properties of mortar composed of PVC plastic waste particles used as fine aggregate replacement material. PVC particles in quantities of 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%, and 30% by volume were used for sand fraction substitution. This quantity of PVC was used to formulate seven mixes with a cement content of 525 kg/m3 and a water-to-cement ratio (w/c) of 0.45. At 7 and 28 days, the compressive and splitting tensile strengths of the mortar's mechanical characteristics were evaluated. Additionally, the physical characteristics of density and absorption were investigated. The findings demonstrated that the mechanical properties and density of mortar containing PVC powder were minimized.

The numerical model of different materials and cross sections, an octagonal section electric pole made from composite material FRP–HDPE–FRP is suggested to replace the traditional one. The results showed high safety factor, approximately 5.51 besides the low ratio of high strength to weight as compared to steel materials. Using HDPE as reinforced material resulted in pole elastically deformed with only 0.222 mm. Therefore, it can be assumed that the suggested pole acts partially as a damper. Straight octagonal cross - section of pole promoted high reduction (74.22%) in maximum Von–Misses stress of that obtained in cylindrical three-stage pole. High reduction (5.87 times) in maximum deformation value was obtained when composite octagonal pole was used as compare to tapered pole made from steel.

Abstract

Aluminum metal matrix composites are widely employed for improving the mechanical properties. Various fabrication routes like liquid state, solid state and liquid-solid state are currently available for producing these materials. The objective of the present work is the fabrication of nano particulate composites AA7075-Al2O3 with different amount of nano particles (20-30 nm) reinforced material Al2O3 (2, 4 and 6 wt%) using stir casting technique at three stirring speeds (300, 850 and 1500 rpm). Tensile tests of these composites were carried-out to obtain the mechanical properties (ultimate strength and ductility). Vickers hardness tests were also performed to obtain the hardness number (VHN) of these materials. All tests were performed at room temperature. The microstructures of the best mechanical properties’ composites were examined for the three stirring speeds. It was revealed that the ultimate strength (?u) and Vickers hardness (VHN) for the composite containing 6 wt% Al2O3 fabricated at 850 rpm show the best properties compared to the other composites fabricated at 300 and 1500 rpm and the matrix. The ?u and VHN were increased by about (36.6 %) and (24.5 %) respectively. Ductility of the strongest composite (6 wt% Al2O3 at 850 rpm speed), however, was the least when compared to other composites and the matrix. With increasing the amount of Al2O3, ?u and VHN, an increasing trend was noticed while the ductility shows a reduction trend. The maximum reduction in ductility occurred for the composite containing 6 wt% Al2O3 obtained at 850 rpm. The ductility of the developed composite was reduced by (23 %). The optical microstructures of unreinforced, as-cast Aluminum alloy AA7075 and 6 wt% Al2O3 composites for all stirring speeds show dendrite microstructure resulting from the casting process, but the composite at the stirring speed of 850 rpm shows a more refined microstructure.

Abstract

Eight RC circular hollow columns (external diameter = 220 mm, internal diameter = 100 mm, length = 1000 mm and the hollow part = 700mm) casted and strengthened with ferrocement fibers composites to illustrate the behavior of these columns under concentric and eccentric axial compression force. Two columns where used as reference columns, which were repaired after failure to be tested as retrofitted columns. Six specimens were strengthened with one and two WWM layers as required. The variables considered included number of the WWM layers (N), the loading configuration and the eccentricity value (e) of loading. The ferrocement thickness was constant at 20 mm in all retrofitted and strengthened specimens.The test results revealed that the maximum increase in the ultimate concentric loads were 67% by strengthening the reference column with two layers of WWM, and the maximum increase in the ultimate eccentric load of columns was 78% by increasing of the WWM from one to two layers. For a constant number of WWM layers, the change from concentric to eccentric force caused a decrease in the ultimate load value attaining 73.5% for one- layer WWM strengthened columns. The failure of columns occurred by yielding of steel reinforcement followed by concrete crushing (i.e. tension failure).

Abstract

Hot mix asphalt embedded on "Reclaimed asphalt pavement"(RAP) has the advantages of high technology. Moisture damage is a concern in these mixtures at all service temperatures. Therefore, the performance of this mixture against moisture at all service temperatures was considered a target of this research study. In this way, the effects of humidity on the performance of varieties were investigated using experimental methods including tensile strength ratio (TSR). In the framework of this study, Four different ratios of RAP for each of the surface and bonding layers (10%, 15%, 20%, 25%) and (30,40,50,60)% were added to the hot asphalt mix (HMA) for the two layers respectively to study and find the content Optimal RAP for both layers RAP through Marshall stability and hygroscopic resistance of asphalt mixtures through moisture damage is examined. The ratio (TSR) of the mixtures containing the optimal RAP content is compared with the asphalt mixture without RAP for three fillers and for both layers. The results showed a slight decrease in the tensile strength of the (HMA) that does not contain RAP compared to the asphalt control mixtures containing the reclaimed pavement, where it was found that the percentages were slightly higher and still higher than 80%. The results indicate that in general, Although there are old materials in the hot asphalt mix (HMA) produced from RAP, which include aggregates and bitumen binder surrounding the aggregate particles, the performance of these mixtures and integrations against moisture damage. Because it contains this, it can have results with “hot asphalt mixtures” containing RAP for areas with damage without worry in addition to good natural curbs.

Abstract

The effects of the repeated solution heat treatment on hardness, tensile strength and microstructure of aluminum were investigated. For this purpose, an alloy of AA6061-T6 was undergo to cyclic solution heat treatment process which is composed of repeated period (10 min) held at 520 °C for 1, 4, 8 and 12 cycles. The hardness was tested for five aging times (as quenching, one week, three weeks, one month and five months) to all cycles (1, 4, 8 and 12) firstly and it is found that the hardness of five months as aging time for all cycles has the best results (90Hv) as compared with others (as quenching, one week, three weeks, and one month), so it was adopted for all cycles to implement the tensile test and the microstructure. Hardness results were improved to Vickers hardness of (90Hv) with increasing of cycles up to 8 cycles then decreasing after that to (45Hv). Tensile results were showed an increment (34%) also for the same group of 8 cycles compared with (17%) and (9%) for 4 and 12 cycles, respectively. Microstructure is revealed that whenever cycles are increased, the precipitate phase in alloy is increased also, thus, it is improved the hardness and tensile strength.

Abstract

In this work, nine types of laminated composite materials used for experimental study to investigate the tensile and fatigue properties of partial foot prosthetic socket which fabricated by using vacuum pressure system . The composite material matrix were Lamination 80:20and reinforced with nine types of laminations (perlon, n-glass, fiber glass and carbon) by variation of thickness according to lamination. Results show that the mechanical properties were improved by increasing the two layers of carbon fiber, fiber glass and n-glass layers instead of zero layer with six layers of perlon lead to the increased in(yield strength ?y, ultimate tensile strength ?ult and modules of elasticity  E with (71% ,76% and 58%) respectively for carbon fiber, (20% , 19% and 40%) for fiber glass and ( 22% , 5.5% and 29% ) for n-glass. Results show that (3perlon+2carbon fiber+3perlon) gives the best value of mechanical properties and has higher Endurance limit stresses (?e) which increase lifetime for the patient . It is recommend to use this type of lamination for the layup partial foot prosthetic socket because it meets the demand lamination layers for acceptable mechanical properties and its minimizing the cost of socket lamination to suitable costing value.

The research includes studying the mechanical properties of BNTN/PAM nanocomposites under static and dynamic conditions. The BNTN/PAM nanocomposites were prepared with different weight fractions (0, 20%, 40%, 50% and 60%) by utilizing ball milling technique. Tensile strength, Charpy impact and Shore A hardness were performed to verify any improvements in these mechanical properties of nanocomposites. The results showed significant improvements in tensile, Charpy impact, Shore A hardness properties of nanocomposites at 50% weight fraction by approximately 335%, 1422%, 63% respectively. These results started decreasing after addition of 60% of nanoclays content to PAM composites. This mechanism indicates that the percentage of weight content of BNTN could affect the mechanical properties of nanocomposites.

Abstract

In this research, binary blends have been prepared from epoxy resin (EP) and different weight percentages of polysulfide rubber (PSR) (0%, 2.5%, 5%, 7.5 and 10%), and then compression, impact, and hardness tests were evaluated. The experimental results showed that the addition of polysulfide rubber in the epoxy resin decreased the compressive strength, Young's modulus, and hardness, while increased the impact resistance. It was found that the weight percentage 5% of polysulfide was the best percentage, which gives the best mechanical properties for the blend matrix. The advantage of this blend matrix is that, it mediates between the brittle properties of epoxy and the flexible properties of a blend matrix with the highest percentage of PSR. Short fibers (Carbon & Glass) with different volume percentage (2.5%, 5%, 7.5%, and 10%), were used to reinforce the best blend matrix obtained separately and randomly, and then the same mechanical tests conducted on these composites. The experimental results showed that the addition of fibers increased the compressive strength, Young's modulus, impact resistance and hardness. It was also observed that the composites materials reinforced with carbon fibers have significantly higher mechanical properties values than the composites materials reinforced with glass fibers.

Abstract

The effect of metal nanoparticles (MNPs) on the electric field strength and distribution for improvement solar cell performance is investigated and simulated. By manipulating the properties of nanoparticles, distribution of the electric field was altered. In this paper, classical solar cell (p-n junction) and improved structure (add an extra layer of SiO2 and gold nanoparticles on the top of p-n junction) is simulated. Different sizes of NPs, thickness of SiO2 sublayer, and spacing distance between NPs is done to improving the electric field and showing plamonic effect. Gold NPs deposition on single crystalline silicon solar cell is modelled by COMSOL 5.2 2D, Electromagnetic wave propagation in the frequency domain with periodic boundary conditions. The best wavelength found in our work is 550 nm. The electric field enhances when the size of NPs increases but it must be limited. When gold NPs are deposited on the SiO2 sublayer, the plasmonic effect appears due to decreasing the refractive index. Moreover, separation distance between NPs affect the electric field enhancement by manipulating the number of NPs, the distance decreases and the plasmonic interaction appears.

Abstract

This paper present glass waste material reusing in concrete as partial replacement of cement.  Some hardened properties like compressive and flexural strengths, modulus of elasticity and % absorption was made. The effect of glass powder on these properties was examined compared to reference specimens without glass powder. Five percentage was tested: 0%(reference), 10%, 15%, 20% and 25%. From tests results one can conclude that replacing cement partially by glass powder enhanced strengths of concrete (compression and flexural) up to 20% replacing level Using glass powder as partial replacement of cement improved strengths and modulus of elasticity of concrete. The %absorption decrease with increasing of glass powder content. The results show that utilization of waste glass as powder in concrete can reduce amount of cement which save cost besides its environmental benefits.

Abstract

The axial capacity and pile transference of loads under static loading have both been well reported, but further research is needed to understand the dynamic lateral responses. The pile load imposed during an earthquake may increase, but the soil’s ability to support it may fall as a side effect of the vibration leading to more settlement. The key objective of this work is to identify what led to the substantial lateral destruction of the piles during the seismic event due to the kinematic effects. These failures were related to discontinuities in the subsoil as a result of sudden changes in soil strength due to shaking. The kinematic stresses exerted in a single pipe pile constructed in two sand layers under two different situations (dry and saturated states) are investigated in this study using numerical modeling. The bending moments were higher in the saturated sand soil than in the dry one which may be attributed to liquefaction. Generally, the acceleration increased through the loose layer (from bottom to top), and then significantly settled within the dense layer. It could be shown that using this modeling, one can estimate how a pile foundation will behave under "kinematic" loading driven by earthquakes. Therefore, the design and installation of drilled aluminum or steel piles in sand soil could make use of these present observations.

Abstract

In this paper, we suppose a method for reducing the dispersion in the plastic optical fiber (POF) Bragg gratings based on optimizing the grating coupling-strength (?) using genetic algorithms. The effects of average refractive index (?n) and temperature (T) change on the dispersion properties are investigated numerically. It is found that the amplitude of the ?n for low dispersion performance needs to be reduced at the cost of the design complexity of the POF Bragg gratings. Owing to the unusually large and negative thermo-optic coefficient of the POF, the dispersion due to the wavelength shift induced by the temperature variation will be reduced by operating at high ? value. Results showed that by optimizing the ? value a very large dispersion reduction range has been obtained, from 1178 to 11.5 ps/nm at 30 mm grating length.

The effects of the ultrasonic peening treatment (UPT) on the rotating bending fatigue behavior and the behavior of the vibrations of alloy steel DIN 41Cr4 were studied. Hardness test, Tensile test, Constant amplitude fatigue tests, and the vibrations measurements have been carried out on the specimens. Also, the fracture surface was examined and analyzed by a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The results of the investigations, e.g. stress to number of cycles to failure (S-N) curves, fatigue strength improvement factor was 7%. The decreasing percentage of maximum Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) acceleration of the ultrasonic peened condition compared to the untreated conditions was 45%.

An important challenge confronted when using blanking to machine sheet metal is the treatment of the shearing force in demand for great strength and heavy stock. One of the methods used to decrease the force wanted is the increase of a punch shear angle. In this work, experiments were conducted to study the effect of shear angle for blank has a diameter (50 mm) on shear force of a low carbon steel sheet (AISI 1008). Low carbon steel is a very common material used in fabrication of sheet metal components, with thickness of (0.5 mm). Tools used in the blanking tests were one traditional flat end punch and four different bevel sheared rooftop punches, which rooftop punches were compared to. and it (0°, 5°, 10°, 15°, 20°) a punches diameter (49.95 mm) by clearance (0.025mm) for each side , with a blanking speed (500mm/min). A special blanking die set is designed and manufactured and was a blank cut by a hydraulic press whose capacity (20 ton). The results showed that the blanking forces of (AISI 1008) low carbon steel metal could be decreased radically with best bevel punch geometry. Using (10°) shear angle at the punch end, the cutting forces decreased up to (90%) compared to the ones of the traditional flat end tool

Abstract

This work describes seam welding process using dissimilar ferrous metals by pulsed Nd:YAG. The main objective of this work is to achieve the best welding conditions. This imposes careful selection for the welding parameters and inevitably the well design of experiment (DOE). Sheets of ASTM A240/316L stainless steel to ASTM A570/Gr30 carbon steel all of 0.5 mm in thickness were lap welded. Different pulse energies or the related peak power, pulse duration, pulse repetition rate, and welding speeds were used. Moreover, different welding speeds were controlled by the employed manipulator. The laser beam spot diameter and the standoff distance were fixed. Experimental results are supported by the computational 2D and 3D models. In this article response surface methodology (RSM) was applied to design the experiment and obtain the best parameters through a set of mathematical models that define the weld characteristics. The results show that the best joint in term of joint strength is obtained at 31.9 J pulse energy (related to 5.5 kW peak power and 5.8 ms pulse duration), power density of 1.43×106 W/cm2, 1.5 Hz pulse repetition rate, and 0.5 mm/s welding speed.

Abstract

Improving the ability of asphalt pavement to survive the heavily repeated axle loads and weathering challenges in Iraq has been the subject of research for many years. The critical need for such data in the design and construction of more durable flexible pavement in bridge deck material is paramount. One of new possible steps is the epoxy asphalt concrete, which is classified as a superior asphalt concrete in roads and greatly imparts the level of design and construction. This paper describes a study on 40-50 penetration graded asphalt cement mixed with epoxy to produce asphalt concrete mixtures. The tests carried out are the Marshall properties, permanent deformation, flexural fatigue cracking and moisture damage. Epoxy asphalt mixes performed better on resistance to fatigue and permanent deformation. They also performed significantly better on low-temperature properties and resistance to moisture damage. The addition of 30 percent of epoxy (by weight of asphalt cement) resulted in increase of Marshall stability by 39.8 percent, improve the tensile strength ratio by 22.9 percent, lowering both the rate of permanent deformation by 26.8 percent and the fatigue accumulation coefficient by 53.5 percent, in comparison with control HMA. Based on the above findings, it is recommended to use epoxy asphalt mixes as an optimal material for paving bridges deck in Iraq since it showed good prospects for this application due to the valuable performance and durability improvement.

Abstract

The objective of this study is determining the mixing and compaction temperature of the modified asphalt mixture. Results of binder tests showed that the addition of 3% SBS  to control asphalt (PG 64-16) would achieve the desired performance level (PG 76-16) a performance grade that fits our climate with traffic loads. When using 5% SBS the performance grade of binder increased three grades (PG 82-16) and when increasing SBS content to 8% the performance grade increased four grades (PG 88-16). At shear rate of 500 (s-1), the modified asphalt viscosity can be obtained at different temperatures and the viscosity temperature curve can be achieved. As a result, the mixing and compaction temperature of modified asphalt can be determined to reach 0.17 ± 0.02 Pa.s and 0.28 ± 0.03 Pa.s for mixing and compaction, respectively. It is noted that SBS modified reached a viscosity of 3 Pa.s when 8 % additive. Additive contents above these values may not be suitable for good workability and pump ability according to Superpave specifications. While addition of 5% SBS with control asphalt, more than 3.7times at 135°C Increase the viscosity. Marshall Stability test indicated that the strength for the SBS specimens increases as compared to the conventional specimens. An increase of about 39%, 74%, 102%, was observed with 3%SBS 5%SBS 8%SBS modified binders, respectively. The Marshall test results for 8%SBS binders required compaction temperatures above 175°C need to keep up quality of HMA item while limiting natural effect amid development, these proposals are unsatisfactory Modified mixtures the 5% SBS modification was determined to be the maximum useful content. The Superpave method to estimate mixing and compaction temperatures show are not practical for use with modified binders. Also,  it is observed that good agreement values between the average Marshall compaction temperature and the High Shear Viscosity Method (HSRV) and   lower than Superpave methods Where the decline ranges from 15 ºC to 17 ºC.

Friction stir welding (FSW), a solid-state welding process, it’s involve a welding by friction between two metals or alloys, and also using for the joining of dissimilar materials due to the lower processing temperature over conventional fusion welding, it's include only one pass of welding. Friction Stir Processing (FSP) is a recent outgrowth of the Friction Stir Welding (FSW) process and relies on solid-state deformation to modify the structure of the workpiece, it's involve two pass or more of welding and applied either on the base metal(BM) or to join the two alloys/metals. In this paper the new method used, namely reverse rotation friction stir processing (RFSP), this research aims to study the effect of (RFSP) technique on the mechanical properties of welded alloys. (FSW) includes a single pass of the welding line but the second method (RFSP) involves two pass of welding (forth and back) but the 1st pass with a rotation speed in clockwise and the 2nd pass in counter-clockwise. The alloys used of dissimilar AA 2024 and AA6061 aluminum alloys of (3mm) thickness, the parameters used in this research include different rotational speed (1600, 1800, 2000 and 2200) RPM and one feed speed (25) mm/min. In the tensile test the results of reverse rotation friction stir processing (RFSP) was higher than friction stir welding (FSW) for all rotation speeds of welding except (1800 RPM). In the microhardness measurement the values of hardness for all samples at the nugget zone is higher than the basemetal of 6061-T6 and lower than the basemetal of 2024-T3. The efficiency of ultimate tensile strength reaches to about (72 %) for (RFSP) as compare with value of (FSW) and it’s about (44%) at rotation speed (1600 RPM).The only exception of welding was when the rotational speed of (1800 RPM), where the (FSW) is better than (RFSP), efficiency was approximately (77%) for the (FSW) compared with the results of (71%) (RFSP).

Abstract

In this research fiberglass is replaced with monofilament fiber in order to be safe to on makers and users of this socket. In this paper two models of lamination manufacturing have been made and compared in terms of mechanical properties and fatigue life. The first is available and consists of: (4 perlon, 2 fiberglass and 4 perlon), The second is proposed lamination which consists of: (4 perlon, 1 cotton, 1 monofilament and 4 perlon). Simulations were conducted on the made socket made of two types of lamination by using ANSYS 14.5 to show the distribution of stresses, the amount of deformation and less safety factor for both cases. The results show an increase of 42% in the Young's modulus and a decrease in tensile stress and yield stress by 10.8% and 46% respectivel, As for the stress endurance it witnessed an increase of 140%.The simulation results show a decrease in the deformation by 40.7% and an increase in the minimum value of the safety factor of 0.323 to 1.05.

Abstract

In this work, Aluminum alloy (AA2024-T3) was welded by friction stir (FSW) method using different pin profile design types; straight cylinder, threaded cylinder, tapered cylinder hexagonal, square, and threaded taper. For each type, a flat and concave shoulder was used, as well as, the welding process was single and double. The results of mechanical tests are analyzed using design of experiments method (DOE). The best and weaken mechanical properties (tensile strength, bending force and hardness) are observed when the welding is achieved by hexagonal and straight cylinder pin profile respectively. A concave shoulder gave higher mechanical properties as compared with flat shoulder. The change in welding process type presented a sensible effect. Nugget zone hardness is higher than that of base metal for all specimens. The optimum hardness result is recorded by hexagonal pin with concave shoulder profile.

Abstract

In this study the friction stir lap welding was carried out by a new technique (diffusion bonding phenomenon) between (AA1100 and low carbon steel C10 sheets of 3mm and 1mm thickness respectively. These alloys have difference ranges in melting temperature and other physical properties.  Different parameters were used: tool rotation speeds (630, 1250) rpm, travel speeds (80, 32) mm/min. and pin length (2.8,3) mm  using cylindrical threaded pin. Many tests and inspections were performed such as tensile shear test and X-Ray diffraction tests. Microhardness and microstructure observations were conducted by using optical and SEM. The above tests were used to evaluate the weld quality and joint efficiency under different welding parameters. Best result for  FSLW by  diffusion phenomenon  appear in (low carbon steelC10 / AA1100-H112) joint at 1250rpm  in 32 mm/min. with 2.8mm pin length and the maximum tensile shear strength was (3.9)KN.It was found that the highest micro hardness was (138HV) at the interface between the low carbon steel and AA1100.

Abstract

Consider polymers and polymer matrix composite are the basis of the most prevalent material in all industrial and medical fields because of its properties qualify to occupy an advanced position among other engineering materials because of its good properties._x000D_ Therefore, This work focuses on the preparation of base polymer matrix composite materials and study non-saturated polyester as matrix has been strengthened by zeolite particles different grain sizes (25 - 65 - 75) µm and different volume fractions (1,5 - 3 - 4,5 - 6 - 7,5 - 10) % was strengthened by Carbon short fibers and constant volume fraction (8%),the tests tensile and bending according to ASTM specifications, respectively. Through the results it was observed that the maximum tensile strength improved through hybrid reinforcement when reached the maximum value when the grain size (25 µm ) and at volume fraction (7.5%), reaching ( 94 N/mm2 )compared with the rest of sizes and at the same volume fraction reaching (78 N/mm2 for 65 µm , 69 N/mm2 for 75 µm), As for the bending test has been getting maximum Flexural resistance at grain size (25 µm) at volume fraction ( 6%) reached to(111 N/mm2) ,if compared with the rest of sizes at the same volume fraction reaching (100 N/mm2 for 65 µm,79 N/mm2 for 75 µm) while was obtained on the maximum bending modulus at grain size (25 µm) and at volume fraction (10%) reach to (8099 N/mm2) if compared with the rest of sizes at the same volume fraction reaching (7466 N/mm2 for 65 µm, 6666 N/mm2 for 75 µm ). Through the results we note that for the particle size and fiber effect in improving the mechanical behavior of the composite material prepared.

Abstract

Biodegradable polymers are very useful polymers in biomedical applications. In this research, several hydrogels were fabricated by using two polymers, Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and Chitosan (Chs) by the solvent casting method in order to use them for skin applications. Several tests were carried out on these membranes such as Agar diffusion method to examine their antimicrobial activities, Fourier transform infrared microscopy (FTIR) test to study the differences in their chemical structures. Uniaxial tensile test was performed to examine the mechanical characteristics of these membranes. In addition, the wettability test was used to investigate the hydrophobicity or hydrophilicity of the surfaces. The results showed that all membranes are hydrophilic, of which the contact angles are less than 90°. The membrane manufactured from 75:25 Chs-PVA is more hydrophobic (contact angle is 74°) than other membranes made of 50:50 Chs-PVA and 25:75 Chs-PVA as the contact angles were 59° and 61°, respectively. The tensile test results indicate that the membrane fabricated of the PVA and the membrane that was fabricated by 75% Chs and 25% PVA has the highest tensile strength of 17.9 MPa, 16.2 MPa and Young^’ s Modulus of 181.2 MPa and 7.18 MPa, respectively. The highest strain at break was observed by the membrane of 25:75 Chs-PVA which equals to 24.67%. Chitosan membranes showed inhibition zones of about 2.99 cm and 2.75 cm in length, and 75:25 Chs-PVA membranes showed 5.1 and 5.91 cm in length for E.coli. To sum up, this copolymer is considered as promising hydrogel for skin applications such as wound dressing.

Abstract

Open graded asphalt mixture is becoming more widespread where it is applied for various purposes, e.g. drainage of rainwater effectivity, traffic safety (high skid resistance), and controlling pollution noise. However, it has many other disadvantages, of which low stability, high stripping, and moisture sensitivity. The research aims to study the effect of styrene butadiene styrene SBS addition on the volumetric and mechanical properties of open graded mixture. In this research one type of aggregate with gradation (12.5 mm NMAS), asphalt of penetration grade (40/50), and cement as filler were used. Optimum asphalt content was selected based on the criteria of air voids content, asphalt drain down, permeability, and abrasion resistance (for aged and un-aged) samples. Other properties of open-graded mixtures, such as indirect tensile strength (ITS), moisture susceptibility, Marshall stability and flow were evaluated. The results show that addition of polymer (SBS) leads to an enhancement in the properties of the modified mixtures. There is an improvement in Marshall parameters. Also, a slight decreasing is noticed for permeability and air voids. For Cantabro abrasion loss (aging and un-aging condition), the abrasion resistance is increased, the drain down of asphalt is decreased from original mixture by addition of SBS. Finally, the moisture sensitivity is improved indicating that modified mixes becomes more resistant to water damage.

Abstract

Shallow foundation suffers from considerable settlement, displacement and tilting under earthquakes. This is particularly due to the shaking associated with earthquakes that lead to the generation of horizontal seismic load transferred through the soil to the foundation. Also, liquefaction could take place during the earthquake in the saturated loose sand. To alleviate the detrimental effect of earthquakes, ground improvement is required. This study examines the response of the shallow square foundation rested on loose sand soil reinforced with geogrid reinforcement when subjected to 2023 Turkey earthquake by using a shaking table system. Different number of geogrid layers are installed; (one, two, three and four), also various geogrid configurations were examined which are (straight, trapezoidal and reverse trapezoidal). The acceleration response, settlement, horizontal displacement, rotation and pore water pressure developed in the sand soil and the shallow foundation during 2023 Turkey earthquake has been examined. The settlement and the horizontal displacement, foundation rotation, acceleration and pore water pressure were measured using rope displacement transducers, tilt sensors, accelerometers and pore water transducers respectively.  The results showed that the acceleration amplifies when passing through loose sand. The results also indicated that the shallow foundation experienced noticeable settlement, horizontal displacement and rotation when subjected to the seismic loads. On the other hand, the installation of geogrid proved to be effective in controlling the problems associated with earthquakes. The optimum geogrid reinforcement is occurred when three layers of geogrid placed in reverse trapezoidal configuration (3RT) since it gave the best reduction in the acceleration amplification and the highest decrease in the foundation settlement, displacement and tilting which is about (60-66) %. Nevertheless, the effectiveness of geogrid minimizes when the sand soil becomes saturated. In addition, liquefaction occurs during earthquakes especially at the shallower depths because of the decrease in the shear strength of saturated soil.

Abstract

The microstructural analysis and electrochemical measurements tests were used to investigate the behaviors of (TiO2) and (HAp)-coated Ti-6Al-7Nb alloy in the SBF solution .By using RF sputtering, a thin TiO2 layer coated  the substrate, while a thick layer of HAp coated the outer side of surface. The generated middle layer consist of  the  composite of TiO2 and HAp which is by AFM characterized as uniformly distributed coating system with nano size. The images of the scan electron microscopy (SEM) shows that there is no any cracking observed in the outer layer of tested samples due to the use of thin film TiO2 as mid lead to reduce the difference in the thermal expansion between the HAp material and Ti-6Al-7Nb substrate .The HAp upper layer significantly improve the bioactivity of the Ti-6Al-7Nb alloy. In this study, the bonding strength and the corrosion resistance was improved by using thin layer of TiO2. From electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) study Bod plot, the composite layer of TiO2 and HAp was suggested by the capacitive act as barrier layer coated substrate and prevent the relays of the ion from metallic. The results shows the values of Rox (309.2 k? cm2)are greater than for Rct(19.2 k? cm2), by assumes the presence  oxide film increases for coated substrate are greater than that of uncoated, which is a result of the presence of coated film that improve the corrosion resistance of the sample.

Abstract

The mixing technique was applied in this study to enhance the strength performance of the cement. The addition of 3% by weight of hydroxyapatite (HA) nanoparticles were mixed with 97% polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) acrylic polymer, which has a nano size to serve as the matrix material. The surface roughness and continuous porosity of the bone cement were found to be slightly increased by the incorporation of nanoparticles, which enhanced bone-implant osseointegration and ingrowth. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) analysis revealed that the addition of hydroxyapatite (HAp) nanoparticles resulted in a surface roughness value (Sa) of 16.25 nm, which is similar to that of natural bone. The energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) mapping results discover precentor material and uniform distribution. The Sample exhibited promising results in the antibacterial test, showing efficacy against bacteria both with and without sterilization, confirming its antibacterial properties. The mechanical tests conducted on the sample, including tensile, compression, bending and Vickers hardness tests, yielded favorable results and indicated that the sample is suitable for its intended application.  In the theoretical works the design of the bone, screw, and bone plate was conducted using SolidWorks, followed by an analysis using ANSYS under both axial and bending load conditions. The theoretical analysis revealed that the safety factor was less than 1 when an axial load of 13 N was applied and a bending load of 2 N was applied, indicating that the structure may not be able to withstand these loads safely. Under both ambient and physiologically relevant conditions in the human body, HA and PMMA have demonstrated to be excellent choices for enhancing the clinical performance of bone cement. This, in turn, can lead to increased longevity of implants, decreased patient risk, and lower healthcare costs

Abstract

The aim of this study was to support surgeons to decide where to place the screws in order to achieve an optimal fracture healing and to prevent implant failure after a femoral shaft fracture So this paper focus on the analysis of bone-plate construct by using Finite element Analysis (FEA), comminuted femur fractured bone fixed with Dynamic Compression Plate (DCP) 16 holes by 4.5 Cortex screws, to investigate the effects of screws configuration on the mechanical behavior of different seven model as Interfragmentary strain which is the most important factor for femur fracture healing. The results state the relationships between the Von-Mises stress, Total deformation and Interfragmentary strain with respect to the screws configuration. The study shows the regions of maximum stress from stress distribution and also founded that we can decrease the Interfragmentary strain by increasing the number of screws.

Abstract

In the present work the effect of heat treatment processes at different temperatures and in different quenching media on mechanical properties in addition to corrosion behavior in different pH solutions of aluminum alloy 6061 was achieved.The alloy was received as fabricated and the solution heat treatment processes was achieved at temperatures (490,530,570 °C), then quenching for every degree was done in two media (water, oil) to obtain on six samples. The artificial aging was done on every sample at temperature (160°C) for one hour.The microstructure was examined to show Mg2Si in every sample.The results of hardness test showed that the hardness of alloy increased with increasing heat treatment temperatures, and at the same temperature the quenched specimens in oil had higher hardness.On the other hand, the tension tests showed that the strength of alloy increased with increasing of heat treatment temperature, and at the same temperature the quenched specimens in water had higher hardness.The results of corrosions test showed that the heat treatment operations improved corrosion resistance, and the lower value was get upon treating at 530°C.

Abstract

This research was conducted to investigate the effect of using internal steel plates for shear reinforcement on flexural behavior of SCC beams instead of using traditional reinforcement bars (stirrups) and to study the effect of their spacing and thickness on strength. The experimental work included destructive tests on six SCC beams under two-point load. The results showed that the yield loads in all of the beams with steel plates were lower than the reference beam by (5.21%) on average, the deflection at yield load was higher by (13.72%) on average and the ultimate loads were lower by (6.77%) on average except in one beam where it was higher by (0.37%). It was also found that the ultimate deflection in beams with internal shear steel plates was lower by (10.01%) on average except in the aforementioned beam where it was higher by (2.31%). Ductility in all beams with steel plates was lower by (20.08%) on average and the strain before a load of (200kN) was higher in the longitudinal reinforcement and lower in shear steel plates and vice versa after a load of (200kN). Theoretical analysis was also carried out for all beams using the finite element program ANSYS (version 15) where theoretical results of load versus mid-span deflection relations, longitudinal reinforcement strain, shear reinforcement strain, variations of neutral axis depths and cracks patterns showed good agreement with experimental ones. Finally, some specific further studies were recommended.

Abstract

Concrete is considered the most important and widely used building material in the world of construction and building due to its durability, high efficiency in shaping, and relatively reasonable cost. The main component of concrete is cement, and one of the most important problems related to cement is the environmental problems associated with cement manufacturing, as the cement manufacturing process releases a large amount of carbon dioxide. Despite the essential role of concrete in construction, we cannot ignore its environmental impact. Some claim that exploring alternative materials or innovative building techniques would reduce the carbon footprint and enhance sustainability in the industry. Partial cement replacement with pozzolanic materials like zeolite is a key technique to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Zeolite, which reduces permeability, is a typical concrete ingredient that strengthens and lasts. Recently, natural zeolite has become a prominent concrete pozzolanic component. For environmental preservation and sustainable development, various experiments were done on concrete with pozzolanic components partially substituting cement and compared to ordinary concrete. A partial replacement of cement with zeolite improves the properties of concrete up to a certain age and mixing ratio. More than 44 relevant articles from 2004–2024 were selected from 762 papers evaluated for this paper. This paper reviews natural zeolite research in real applications. Additionally, it provided a cutting-edge review of natural zeolite literature through a critical analysis of various previous investigations. It also helped to understand how zeolite influences concrete mixture workability, strength, and durability. Since zeolite is a major concrete ingredient, it should be promoted as a sustainable resource.

Abstract

This research deals with the extent to which corrosion affects the behavior of buckling for 6061-T4 aluminum alloy under increasing compressive dynamic loads. Two types of columns, long, and intermediate were used.1% of the length column is the allowable lateral deflection. This is called the critical buckling of the columns. For the purpose of calculating the critical deflection, a digital dial gauge was used and set at a distance of 0.7 of column length from the fixed end condition for the column. The experimental analysis revealed that the corrosion time negatively affects the mechanical properties of materials such as the corroded specimens of 60 days (The least time to observe the corrosion of aluminum in the soil) which have approximately 2.7 % reduction in ultimate strength compared with the non-corroded specimen.  Increasing the corrosion time reduces the critical load such as the maximum reduction will be 4.24% in critical buckling load for 60 days’ corrosion time. The results obtained were experimentally compared with the theoretical formulas of the Perry-Robertson and Euler-Johnson formula with the results of the ANSYS. It was found that the Perry-Robertson formula has a good agreement with the experimental results with a safety factor of 1.2, while the Euler-Johnson formula agreed with the experimental results taking a safety factor of 1.5. The ANSYS results showed a good agreement between the measured and calculated values by taking 1.1 factor of safety.

Abstract

The phenomenon of climate change resulting from the increase of global warming has become one of the main problems facing the world. Where researchers and specialists have worked for many years to find a solution that reduces this phenomenon and limits its risks. It is likely that clean energy is an alternative to fossil fuel sources, which are the main source of global warming. One of the clean energy sources is ocean wave energy, which is a huge and untapped energy source, despite the possibility of extracting large energy from waves. This paper focuses on the study of deep-sea turbines and their results. A study was conducted on the capture chamber. Where this paper presents an experimental model of a water tank with certain dimensions in the university laboratories to describe the dynamic behavior of the capture chamber. The Froude number scale was used to model the dimensions and depth of the water as well as the wave properties.  Through experimental work and its results show, and it was found that the power generated by the motion of the wave strength is related to the height and frequency of the wave.

Abstract

Reinforced concrete slab with plastic voids (Bubbled Deck system) is a new type of slabs which has two-dimensional arrangement of voids within the slab that is developed to decrease the slab self-weight while maintaining approximately the same load carrying capacity as compared with the solid slabs. Plastic voided slabs have the ability to reduce concrete amount by about 30 percent and this reduction is so important in terms of cost saving and enhancement the structural performance. In this research paper investigation is carried out to study the shear strength behavior of one-way bubble deck slab using self-compacting reinforced concrete. The experimental program consists of testing thirteen one-way slabs with dimensions of (1700 length, 700 width and 150 thick) mm. One of the tested slabs is a solid slab (without balls) is used as a reference, the remaining twelve bubbled slabs with ball diameter (73, 60) mm are divided into five groups according to the parameters of the experimental work, the parameters of the experimental work include: type of slab (bubble and solid slabs), ball diameter (73, 60) mm, shear reinforcement and spacing between balls. The experimental results showed that the bubbled slabs without shear reinforcement have a decrease in the ultimate load as compared to solid slab by about 3.7% to 14.3% and an increase in the deflection at ultimate load by about 10% to 22%, at the same time the first crack load decreases by about 15.3% to 42.4% as compared to solid slab due to decreases of moment of inertia of bubble slab compared to solid slab. Also, the results showed that the bubbled slabs withe shear reinforcement (multi-leg) have an increase in the ultimate load as compared to solid slab by about 35.4% to 57.3% and an increase in the deflection at ultimate load by about 1% to 15%, at the same time the first crack load decreases by about 2.8% to 27.4% as compared to solid slab.

Abstract

The research focuses on studying the effect of microwave energy as an alternative heating method on dyeing and printing pretreatments of cotton fabrics. In this research, a microwave oven was used to heat the solutions which used in de-sizing, scouring, bleaching and mercerizing processes at different energy levels. The results showed the importance of this heating method in improving desizing efficiency where the best result was obtained at 180 W and 24 min and this method was beneficial in saving energy and time. The best result in scouring was obtained at 720 watts and 24 minutes, whereas at 720 watts and 20 minutes was the best result in bleaching. We can save energy, time and chemicals compared with the conventional method. The mercerizing by microwave increased the absorption of dye solutions for the samples compared with the traditional method, where the color strength increased by increasing the treatment time and the level of energy in the microwave and the best result was obtained at 900 watts and 90 seconds.

Abstract

Quality control of riverbank roads is a vital part of the road construction and maintenance process and aims to ensure infrastructure quality, safety, and sustainability. This requires adherence to technical standards, constant auditing, and regular maintenance to maintain the condition of the roads and avoid potential problems. The first step in the quality control of roads is to test the efficiency of the subgrade soil. A geotechnical investigation of subgrade soil under river bank roads is carried out to evaluate the engineering properties of the soil and determine the soil’s ability to bear the loads resulting from vehicle movement and road traffic. This investigation includes analyzing soil samples and laboratory tests to determine soil properties and determine any improvements the soil needs to bear the loads. Soil samples were collected from Al-Kadhimiya Corniche Street. It was dried and subjected to laboratory tests, the soil in this study is classified as poorly graded sand (SP), GS 2.589, the shear strength parameters an internal friction angle of 33 degrees and cohesion of 0.5 kN/m2, and the results of the compaction test indicated that the optimal moisture content was 8.1%, with a maximum dry density was 18.24 kN/m3, CBR 26.04%, and chemical tests (SO3  0.222, pH 8.55, T.SS 0.891, CL 0.085). Software FAARFIELD was used to check pavement design, the thickness design was executed utilising a subgrade CBR value of 26.04%. The subgrade pavement thickness was determined to be 304mm in total. The results agree with the actual design of Al-Kadhimiya Corniche Street, which was recently maintained during the field investigation in 2023.

Abstract

Friction Stir Welding is one of the most practical welding process at the solid state. Friction Stir Processing is used to enhance the microstructure of FSW welded zone. The present study investigates the effect of welding parameters on the tensile properties   of FSW and FSP  joining 3 mm  AA 5083 - H111 aluminum alloy by means of  stress – strain curve with a uniaxial tensile test and by comparing the efficiency between FSW , FSP and base metal .The experiments were conducted with 1000,1500 and 2000 rpm rotation speeds ,and 20,40 and 60 mm/min travel speed. The best  result of the welding joint was shown at the 20 mm/min feed speed and 1500 rpm rotational speed for FSW, and 40 mm/min feed speed and 1500 rpm rotation speed for FSP. The efficiency of ultimate tensile strength reaches to 92% for FSW and 94% for FSP.

Abstract

Numerical analysis of the performance of reinforced concrete (RC) deep beam subjected to static and fixed-point pulsating loading at the midpoint has been investigated. Three-dimensional nonlinear finite element model using the Strut and Tie approach was adopted. The damage level under the influence of the applied fixed pulsating loading is higher than the static applied loading, hence early crack was observed because of the stepwise loading in the form of vibration. Although the Strut and Tie approach gave a good estimation of the resistance capacity of the beam, the beam undergo high shear damage when subjected to these two types of loading. Material strength properties, applied loadings and cross-sections adopted are some of the factors that affect the performance of the deep beam.

Abstract

This research submits theoretical and experimental realization of shear behavior of RC I-beams with polypropylene fiber with different volume fraction of plastic fiber as additive. The enhance of the sustainability of structural elements through the development of its mechanical performance by adding new materials such as plastic raw materials has become more important in the current period , particularly I- beams that was used in the long spans structure to become more environmentally-friendly. Seven specimens were tested in this study and only the amount of fiber volume fraction was varied. Experimental results showed that the ultimate strengths are increased in range (4.4% to 35.27%) that of control IB-1 for the tested beams containing Polypropylene Fiber Reinforced Concrete (PPFRC) with varied amount percentage of fiber material. Crack arrest mechanism of polypropylene fibers, and compressive strength of concrete increased in range (7.42% to 29.3%) that of plain concrete, and improved the tensile response in range (8.36% to 92.7%) that of plain concrete, limited crack propagation. So, improved behavior was obtained._x000D_ ANSYS 11, Finite Element models software are used to emulate two tested I-beams. 3D - nonlinear solid elements was utilized to model the concrete, while, the steel reinforcement was demonstrated by spar element. It was found that the general practices of the FE models demonstrated acceptable concurrence with perceptions and information from the experimental tests.

Abstract

Gypsum soil is classified as problematic because it contains gypsum, a soluble substance in the presence of water. Therefore, it is recommended that it be improved before construction. This research examines the effect of clayey soils on enhancing the properties of gypseous soils. Two soil samples, designated as Soil 1 (with a gypsum concentration of 35.4%) and Soil 2 (with a gypsum content of 12.3%), were obtained from Al Najaf City, Iraq, and subjected to laboratory testing. The study investigates the use of cost-effective, locally available clayey soil to improve the engineering characteristics of gypseous soils, thereby mitigating the adverse effects of wetting. The experimental program encompassed a compaction, compressibility, and shear strength test. To assess the impact of clayey additives, gypseous soil was treated with varying percentages of clayey soil content (5% and 10%), and tests were conducted on both treated and untreated gypseous soil samples. The results indicated that using 10% clayey additives could decrease the collapse potential by 55% and 39% for Soil 1 and Soil 2, respectively. Additionally, the clayey additives significantly affected cohesion, with an enhancement percentage of 625% and 1315% under soaking conditions at 10% clayey additives for Soil 1 and Soil 2, respectively.

Abstract

Most of building rubbles or wastes contain some damaged materials such as cement, brick, steel, ceramic, plastic and other substances. Among these materials, ceramic and brick when using both of them as a partial replacement by the weight of conventional coarse aggregate in mixture concrete with presence of variety ratios ( 10% to 30%) for sawdust as replacement of fine aggregate, the resulting concrete properties will affected. So, this paper was based on the study some properties of concrete that produced of 50% replacement for those rubbles plus to presence 10%, 20% and 30% sawdust for both of them. The results revealed that present of sawdust with each of type of those rubbles provides database which are potential to be used in the production of lighter and economical new concrete material. Furthermore, the higher ratios of sawdust (more than 10 %) lead to obvious affected on the strength as well as other properties. While, those negative effects will perceptible improved when added 10% sawdust in ceramic aggregate concrete compared to brick aggregate concrete.

Abstract

Utilization of additives can be an effective way to improve the durability and performance of HMA, making them more resistant to Moisture and deformation. Plus, they can reduce the need for maintenance and repairs, saving you time and money in the long run. In this study,  CKD was used in place of limestone as a filler in the asphalt mixture in proportions of 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%, and polymer SBS 4%by weight of asphalt. According to the findings, replacement-content CKD had the highest asphalt content. When the CKD is between 25% and 50%, Stability, Flow, and Indirect Tensile Strength are improved, while the density of the asphalt mixture decreases and the amount of air voids increases at higher ratios. While SBS leads to an increase in the hardness of the adhesives. As a consequence, the stability of the SBS-containing mixes resulted in higher values than the control and additive-containing mixtures (CKD), as well as a decrease in the number of air voids. According to the results, CKD should not constitute more than half of the filler weight in the asphalt mixture.

Abstract

Due to their very good mechanical properties of composite materials which led to a huge increase in its application in a lot of fields.Epoxy/ PS(polysulfide) composite materials  behavior in fatigue was reported. different weight fraction of PS (2%,4% and6%) were studied .Surface roughness properties of the blended composites were found for all weight fraction of PS and their fatigue properties are studied .Fatigue test was carried with rotating bending method. The loading in the test  was sinusoidal  wave type. The loading wave ratio is R = -1 and the frequency of loading is applied to avoid temperature rise with a frequency equal to 5Hz. Fatigue strength ,fatigue life and fatigue limit of the tested composites from standard curves are calculated. The addition of PS resulted in  an enhancement in  the fatigue values and cause the surface roughness to decrease at a considerable rate, the blend hardness is reduced considering shore A test.

Abstract

Reflective cracking is a serious issue that Adversely influences the performance and longevity of asphalt overlays over deteriorated pavements. This review Looks for the Technologies which used to reduce the reflection cracks propagation by insert a new Strategies and different design materials. This research dealt with many treatments such as: increasing the layer thickness of Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA), creating modified asphalt by adding polymers to asphalt, rubberizing asphalt, carbon black, sulfur and other different materials. Geosynthetic materials were studied and analyzed to evaluate their ability to increase the layer tensile strength and minimize the effect of reflection cracks such as geotextiles, geogrids, and Stress Absorbing Membrane Interlayers (SAMI). The research shows that the increasing of overlay asphalt layer thickness leads to durability development. On the other hand, using developed materials like Polymer-Modified Asphalt and Stress Absorbing Membrane Interlayers (SAMI) Strategies leads to increasing the service life of the repaired pavement. The conclusion indicated that the development of overlay asphalt layer thickness and layer reinforcement and applying advanced environmental systems can be improving the pavement performance. These Strategies can produce a perfect solution to prevent or reduce the reflection cracks in rigid and flexible pavement.
