Plagiarism

Commitment to Originality Al-Nahrain Journal for Engineering Sciences (NJES) is committed to publishing high-quality, original research. We maintain a zero-tolerance policy towards plagiarism and any form of academic misconduct. Authors are responsible for ensuring that the work they submit is entirely their own and that any work or words of others are appropriately cited.

1. Plagiarism Detection Standards To ensure the originality of submitted content, NJES screens all manuscripts using Turnitin software before the peer review process begins.

  • Total Similarity Score: Must not exceed 20%.

  • Single Source Similarity: Must be less than 5%.

  • Exclusions: The bibliography (references) and small matches (sources with less than 5 words) are excluded from the report.

Note: Turnitin is an aiding tool. The Editorial Board conducts a manual examination of the report to distinguish between legitimate citations and actual plagiarism.

2. What Constitutes Plagiarism? Plagiarism occurs when the work of others—including text, data, theories, images, or diagrams—is submitted as one's own without permission or proper citation. The degree of plagiarism is assessed based on the extent of copied material, the context, and the attribution.

Common Forms of Plagiarism:

  • Literal Copying: Copying another author’s work word-for-word and submitting it as one’s own.

  • Patchwork Copying: Mixing literal copied materials from multiple sources (ranging from paragraphs to large sections) to create a new text.

  • Disguised Copying: Changing key words or phrases while retaining the essential framework and structure of the original text.

  • Rephrasing without Attribution: Paraphrasing material from published sources and presenting it as new, original work without citing the original source.

  • Self-Plagiarism: Recycling content from your own previously published work without proper cross-referencing or justification.

3. Policy for Review Papers For review papers, which naturally summarize existing literature, strict literal copying rules apply differently than for research papers. However, authors are expected to use their own words and interpretations. Direct copying is only permitted when using properly formatted quotations with citations.

4. Handling Plagiarism Cases If plagiarism is detected, the Editorial Board investigates the case to determine if it is an honest mistake or intentional misconduct.

  • Minor/Accidental: Junior authors or those inexperienced in academic writing may be asked to paraphrase and correct the text if the issue appears to be a lack of awareness rather than intent.

  • Major/Intentional: For senior authors or clear cases of data theft and significant copying, the manuscript will be rejected immediately.

  • Sanctions: In severe cases, NJES reserves the right to contact the author's institution and refuse future submissions from the offending authors.
