A Comparative Study on the Design Spectra Defined by Several Codes of Practice on RC Building Located in Baghdad City

Abstract

This paper studies the effect of different design spectral response acceleration parameters as suggested by the uniform building code (UBC), unified facilities criteria (UFC), and Iraqi seismic code(1997) (ISC 97) on the seismic response of reinforced concrete multi-story framed building located in Baghdad city, Iraq. These parameters are: (a) spectral response accelerations Ss, at short periods, and S1 at a 1-second period in accordance with international building code (IBC), (b) seismic zone factor (Z) according to UBC, (c) Seismic hazard zoning coefficient (Z) according to ISC 97. In this paper, first, the elastic seismic responses for significant modes of vibration for chosen building under design response spectrum that obtained from the above mentioned codes are calculated, and then a comparison was made among different design spectral response acceleration parameters. The intent of this study is to review the seismic provisions of the current edition of Iraqi seismic code (1997) to determine whether it provides an equivalent level of safety to that contained in other international codes. Design base shears, lateral seismic forces, inter story drifts, response spectrum modal, effective seismic modification, floors acceleration and story shears are comparatively presented.

Abstract

In this work, the vibrations in the rotor-bearing system are studied experimentally and theoretically using ANSYS Workbench 2020 R1 software to compute the natural frequencies and mode shapes. In the experimental part, the LABVIEW software was used to examine the signal of the frequency domain values obtained from the accelerometer sensors, based on Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) technology and dynamic response spectrum. in the theoretical part, the natural frequencies are determined based on the finite element method for analyzing the system and knowing its behavior and vibration response level. The results showed that the level of vibration becomes higher at high rotational speeds, and it becomes large when the distances between the bearings are large, according to the bearing position and type used in the system. in this work can be concluded, the system is usually affected by the dynamic response around it and is difficult to separate from it, and the vibrations in the system can be controlled by adding an external damping source, which gives the system more stable. A system operating at high speeds can give a large vibration and an unbalanced response.

Abstract

This paper presents a numerical investigation to study the effect of variations in displacement history sequence and magnitude on cyclic response of RC tapered (haunched) beams (RCHBs).Five simply supported RCHBs (four haunched and one prismatic) were selected from experimental work carried out by Aranda et al. The selected variables included were five loading history types. The first part of this study focused to verify the finite element analysis with selected experimental work and the second part of this study focused too studying the effect of varying in loading history to the response of RCHBs. The finite element code Abaqus was used in the modeling. The adopted cyclic simulation performance of the selected beams using the plastic- damage model for concrete developed by Lubliner and Lee & Fenves. The constitutive model of plain concrete describing the uniaxial compression response under cyclic loading proposed by Thorenfeldt, and the uniaxial tension response follows the softening law proposed by Hordijk was used in the modeling. Menegotto-Pinto model was used to simulate the steel response. Model verification has shown A good agreement to the selected experimental work. The variations in loading history will decrease the ultimate load and corresponding deflection with increase in the number of cycles at ultimate load.

Abstract

This paper aims to assess the structures' seismic response with a system of Single-degree-of-freedom exposed to near-fault earthquakes, taking into account the effect of pulse period, shear wave velocity (VS30), and fault mechanism. Strong ground motion data were taken for different events in different places around the world and the prism software program is used for the analysis of seismic response for structures recognized as single-degree-of-freedom systems. Results show that the ground motion with a higher value of (VS30) provides an acceleration response higher than that of the lower value of (VS30). However, the findings revealed that the peak displacement requirements are observed in a nearby of the pulse period limits. In addition, it is noticed that there is an obvious increase in spectrum demand with longer pulse periods. Finally, results show at short vibration periods (T? 0.6sec) for both types (strike slip and dip slip) comparable results while an increment is observed in the results of the strike-slip for vibration periods more than (0.6sec) of the acceleration response spectrum. Nonetheless, for the velocity response spectrum dip-slip continuous in flocculating with a significant increase.

Abstract

This paper studies the effect of contact areas on the transient response of mechanical structures. Precisely, it investigates replacing the ordinary beam of a structure by two beams of half the thickness, which are joined by bolts. The response of these beams is controlled by adjusting the tightening of the connecting bolts and hence changing the magnitude of the induced frictional force between the two beams which affect the beams damping capacity._x000D_ A cantilever of two beams joined together by bolts has been investigated numerically and experimentally. The numerical analysis was performed using ANSYS-Workbench version 17.2. A good agreement between the numerical and experimental results has been obtained. In general, results showed that the two beams vibrate independently when the bolts were loosed and the structure stiffness is about 20 N/m and the damping ratio is about 0.008. With increasing the bolts tightening, the stiffness and the damping ratio of the structure were also increased till they reach their maximum values when the tightening force equals to 8330 N, where the structure now has stiffness equals to 88 N/m and the damping ratio is about 0.062. Beyond this force value, increasing the bolts tightening has no effect on stiffness of the structure while the damping ratio is decreased until it returned to 0.008 when the bolts tightening becomes immense and the beams behave as one beam of double thickness.

Abstract

The axial capacity and pile transference of loads under static loading have both been well reported, but further research is needed to understand the dynamic lateral responses. The pile load imposed during an earthquake may increase, but the soil’s ability to support it may fall as a side effect of the vibration leading to more settlement. The key objective of this work is to identify what led to the substantial lateral destruction of the piles during the seismic event due to the kinematic effects. These failures were related to discontinuities in the subsoil as a result of sudden changes in soil strength due to shaking. The kinematic stresses exerted in a single pipe pile constructed in two sand layers under two different situations (dry and saturated states) are investigated in this study using numerical modeling. The bending moments were higher in the saturated sand soil than in the dry one which may be attributed to liquefaction. Generally, the acceleration increased through the loose layer (from bottom to top), and then significantly settled within the dense layer. It could be shown that using this modeling, one can estimate how a pile foundation will behave under "kinematic" loading driven by earthquakes. Therefore, the design and installation of drilled aluminum or steel piles in sand soil could make use of these present observations.

Abstract

In this research, we investigate the nonlinear vibration of functionally graded carbon nanotubes (FG-CNTs) for simply supported sandwich cylindrical panels. The sandwich consisting of three layers formed of (FG-CNTs) and isotropic material as (CNT, ALMINUME, CNT).  Mechanical properties of the sandwich media are acquired according to a re?ned rule of blend approach. The governing equations were derived using a first-order deformation theory (FOSDT). Four kinds of carbon nanotubes of sandwich cylindrical panels were analyzed. The volume fraction of CNTs is varied. The properties of nonlinear responses and free vibration are studied. The numerical approach employs the fourth-order Runge-Kutta and Galerkine procedure. Which conducted for the dynamic analysis of the panels to present the natural frequencies and non-linear dynamic response expression. The results show that; the natural frequencies and the nonlinear vibration amplitude decrease with the volume fraction and thickness ratio increase. The nonlinear vibration amplitude response increases when increasing the excitation force. The initial imperfection and the elastic foundation have a minor impact on the nonlinear vibration response of the panel. The Pasternak Foundation has a larger impact than the Winkler foundation. The structure formed of FG-CNT present an excellent choice for high-performance of engineering applications.

Abstract

Orthoses and prostheses were Chosen and laminated based on their high Yield, ultimate stresses, bending stresses, and fatigue limit. Response Surface Methodology (RSM) was utilized to find the best values for two parameters reinforcement perlon fiber and percent of Titanium Nanoparticle coupled with the matrix resin during optimization. The response surface methodology combined the expertise of mathematicians and statisticians to construct and analyze experimental models. Using this method, we identified 13 different lamination samples comprising a wide range of perlon number and Ti nano Wt% in their Perlon layer composition. All lamination materials defined by RSM methods and produced by a vacuum system were subjected to a battery of tests, with fatigue tests performed on the ideal laminating material in contrast to laminations created in the first study (Tensile test, Bending test, and Fatigue tests according to the ASTM D638 and D790 respectively). In comparison to the other 12 laminations tested using Design Expert version 10.0.2, the lamination with ten perlon layers and 0.75 percent Ti nano proved to be the strongest overall in terms of Yield, ultimate, and bending loads. This study used composite materials and titanium nanoparticles to characterize and fabricate ankle foot orthoses. Strength in bending should amount to about 70 MPa, around 85 MPa in tensile tension. Two empirical quadratic equations for the models of peak bending strength and maximum tensile stress with 95% confidence were created using the response surface approach and analysis of variance within the design of experiments software.

Abstract

Shallow foundation suffers from considerable settlement, displacement and tilting under earthquakes. This is particularly due to the shaking associated with earthquakes that lead to the generation of horizontal seismic load transferred through the soil to the foundation. Also, liquefaction could take place during the earthquake in the saturated loose sand. To alleviate the detrimental effect of earthquakes, ground improvement is required. This study examines the response of the shallow square foundation rested on loose sand soil reinforced with geogrid reinforcement when subjected to 2023 Turkey earthquake by using a shaking table system. Different number of geogrid layers are installed; (one, two, three and four), also various geogrid configurations were examined which are (straight, trapezoidal and reverse trapezoidal). The acceleration response, settlement, horizontal displacement, rotation and pore water pressure developed in the sand soil and the shallow foundation during 2023 Turkey earthquake has been examined. The settlement and the horizontal displacement, foundation rotation, acceleration and pore water pressure were measured using rope displacement transducers, tilt sensors, accelerometers and pore water transducers respectively.  The results showed that the acceleration amplifies when passing through loose sand. The results also indicated that the shallow foundation experienced noticeable settlement, horizontal displacement and rotation when subjected to the seismic loads. On the other hand, the installation of geogrid proved to be effective in controlling the problems associated with earthquakes. The optimum geogrid reinforcement is occurred when three layers of geogrid placed in reverse trapezoidal configuration (3RT) since it gave the best reduction in the acceleration amplification and the highest decrease in the foundation settlement, displacement and tilting which is about (60-66) %. Nevertheless, the effectiveness of geogrid minimizes when the sand soil becomes saturated. In addition, liquefaction occurs during earthquakes especially at the shallower depths because of the decrease in the shear strength of saturated soil.

Abstract

This paper aims to investigate the effect of using different types of pipelines with the servo hydraulic system enhanced with PID controllers tuned by fuzzy logic. The mathematical models of several types of pipelines with different specifications (i.e. area variations in the pipe, disturbance source, etc.) are developed. The effect of the modified pipelines on the position control system at spool displacement is tested,since the servo hydraulic systems are difficult to control due to nonlinearity and complexity of their mathematical models. A PID controller tuned using fuzzy logic technique is used to improve the servo hydraulic system response.The results show that the mathematical models of the pipelines have a significant effect on the performance of the position control system at spool displacement according to the used pipeline type.Furthermore, a more desirable time response specifications and less steady state error are achieved after using the proposed controller.

Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly advancing as a valuable tool in oncology for enhancing detection and management of cancer. The integration of AI with PET/CT imaging presents significant scenarios for improving efficiency and accuracy of cancer diagnosis. This study examines the current applications of AI with PET/CT imaging, highlighting its role in diagnosing, differentiating, delineating, staging, assessing therapy response, determining prognosis, and enhancing image quality. A comprehensive literature search was conducted in six data-bases to get the most recent works, use Springer, Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science, IEEE, and Google Scholar in the last five years (2019-2024), identifying 80 studies that met the criteria for inclusion that focused on AI-driven models applied to PET/CT data in various cancers, with lung cancer being the most studied. Other cancers examined include head and neck, breast, lymph nodes, whole body, and others. All studies involved human subjects. The findings indicate that AI holds promise in improving cancer detection, identifying benign from malignant tumors, aiding in segmentation, response evaluation, staging, and determining the prognosis. However, the application of AI-powered models and PET/CT-derived radiomics in clinical practice is limited because of issues of data normalization, reproducibility, and the requirement of large multi-center data sets for improving model generalizability. All these limitations have to be solved to guarantee the dependable and ethical use of AI in day-to-day clinical activities.

Abstract

This paper presents the design of robust four parameters (two degree of freedom) PI-PD controller based on Kharitonov theorem for antilock braking system. The Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) method is used to tune the parameters of the proposed controller based on Kharitonov theorem to achieve the robustness over a wide range of system parameters change. The proposed cost function combines the time response specifications represented by the model reference and the frequency response specifications represented by gain margin and phase margin and the control signal specifications. The model reference control is used because of the antilock braking system is originally nonlinear and has different operating points. The robust stability is guaranteed by applying the Kharitonov theorem. Three types of road conditions (dry asphalt, gravel and icy) are used to test the proposed controller.

Abstract

Platinum, copper, and nickel were founded the best metals used in resistance temperature detectors RTDs. They commonly used in laboratory and industrial applications because they provide accurate and reliable measurements in a wide temperature range from (- 200 to 850 °C).  They have high conductivity, sensitivity, and hardness to resist strain shock, pressure, and vibration. The accuracy level of them depends on reliability, stability, repeatability, linearity, and response to time. This study aims to determine and compare the accuracy of these three metals in regarding to their features which include stability, repeatability, and response time. The study has gathered and analyzed the data of these suitable and precise metals and compared with each other. The results showed that platinum is widely needed for RTDs due to its precision, stability, higher accuracy, and linearity output, while copper and nickel are not stable or repeatable as platinum. It was indicated that temperature coefficient of resistance TCR for nickel is bigger and for copper is medium, but for platinum is lower.

Abstract

In this work a general dynamic response of two-story building due to earthquake is investigated .A spatial case of two degree mass-spring–damper random vibration model is employed .The base excitation acceleration is represented according to the well- known_x000D_ regression model  by Kanai –Tajimi in term of the power specturm density  (PSD). The transfer function between the ground an the roofs are evaluated assuming transverse modes of vibration._x000D_ A case study of typical two symitrical story building manufactored from reinforced concret and steel is investigated.The vibration parameters such as effective mass and stiffiness and damping are calculated according  to the ACI 318-11 code.The natural frequncies , mode shape and transfer functions are calculated and plotted.The PSD acceleration at the roofs are evaluated from which the mean and standared diviation of the random accelration are found .The drift at the walls is calculated and compared with the allowable limits recommended by IBC 2015 .It is found that the probability of the bulding to be safe is  between (13.74 -7.35)% for the first story and (8.7 - 1.67) % for the second.

Abstract

Dynamic modeling of a robot manipulator is a central problem in an accurate robot control. In this paper; the dynamic equations of motion were derived by using Eular-Lagrange method for a six degree of freedom articulated robot manipulator based on the geometrical jacobian construction for each link and actuator. In addition, friction effects beside the end effector forces that act the environment are considered. A Matlab Simulink plant is developed to embrace the theoretical work and simulate the dynamic response for a designed nonlinear controller Proportional Derivative plus Gravity (PD+G), also a modified controller is applied to reject the disturbances and the internal friction effect where the settling errors were 3.57E-6, 2.09E-7, -3.63E-6, 8.84E-6, -5.39E-8 and -4.39E-5 (deg) for joints one to six respectively. The presented approach can be applicable to solve the dynamic problem of other n-link robot manipulators and achieve a suitable solution for tracking trajectories.

Abstract

In this paper, a dynamic analysis has been carried out on zoned earthdam subjected to earthquake excitation in which pore water pressure, effective stresses and displacements are calculated. The finite element method is used and the computer program Geo-Studio is adopted in the analysis through its sub-programs SEEP/W and QUAKE/W.  A case study is considered to be Khassa Chai dam which is located on Khassa Chai river north of Iraq and consists of zoned embankment with a total length of 3.34 km. The selected earthquake for the analysis is El-Centro earthquake with a period of 10 sec and different amplitudes of acceleration. The time of the analysis is taken as 600 sec. with a time step (?t = 0.05 sec.) to investigate the behavior of the soil for a period of time after the earthquake has stopped, a free vibration period is included in the analysis. It was concluded that the value of pore water pressure generated at the base of the core is greater than that in the upper parts of dam. The horizontal and vertical effective stresses continue to decrease during the period of analysis 600 sec. which indicates that the soil continues to weaken during this period, the horizontal displacement increases with depth of the point from the crest and the largest horizontal displacement will be at the base of the dam at time 60 sec and There is attenuation of the acceleration to some degree depending on the amplitude of the input horizontal acceleration. The maximum horizontal displacement decreases by about 37%, 45% and 49% when using a horizontal drain 2 m thick at the downstream under a peak acceleration of 0.05g, 0.1g and 0.2g, respectively.

Abstract

An investigation of performance response of two types of bearings such as Cylindrical Roller Bearing and bush bearing on evaporative cooler driven by DC motor of 1500 r.p.m, through studying many parameters like vibration response, temperature raise, humidity, sound level and total performance. high quality 3D positions X, Y and Z, vibration sensors type (ADXL335 accelerometers) with Arduino mega 2560 that interfaced with Lab-View program were used to measure changes in vibration amplitude and frequency. Two temperature sensors of type (LM35) were used to investigate the temperature raise in the bearings also with Arduino mega 2560 that interfaced with Lab-View program. For humidity a sensor of type DHT22 was used, also, a portable device was used to measure electricity consumption, rotary speed and sound level in the bearings of evaporative cooler. By replacing bearings all the parameters above wear measured then a comparison between them were made to find the best performance and operation of these bearings. The obtained results from the experimental work have clarified and explained by tables and figures. It has been found that the vibration of evaporative cooler in X, Y and Z-directions increased by using two cylindrical roller bearings than using two of bush bearings. The temperature of cylindrical roller bearings increased When running the evaporative cooler more than bush bearings. the noise of Evaporative Cooler by using both types of Bearings was almost same but with a little Reduce by using cylindrical roller Bearings. Which means the Evaporative Cooler has better Performance by using bush bearings than using cylindrical roller bearings.

Optimization of Process Parameters for Bioethanol Production from Low grade Iraqi Dates

Abstract

Box-Wilson experimental design method was employed to optimize bioethanol production from low grade, unclassified, waste Iraqi dates. The optimization process was based on four independent relevant parameters-initial sugar concentration (50-100 g/l), pH (4.5-6.5), fermentation time (48-96 hrs), and temperature (25-35?). A maximum bioethanol yield of 33.9 g/l was practically achieved following thirty different experimental runs, as specified by 24-Central Composite Design (CCD). The optimum values for the aforementioned four parameters, corresponding to the maximum yield, were: 75g/l, pH 5.5, 72 hrs, 30?, respectively. The obtained experimental data were utilized to develop a semi-empirical model, based on a second-degree polynomial, to predict bioethanol yield. The model was tested using ANOVA software (Design expert® 9) and found acceptable (R2=0.9025). Yield response surface and contour plots were created using the developed model, which revealed the presence of high-yield plateaus whose specifications will be useful in controlling pilot-or industrial scale future units to ensure economical feasibility.

Abstract

This paper proposes a design for a network connected over public networks using Virtual Private Network (VPN) technique. The network consists of five sites; center server and four customer service sites, each site consists of a number of LANs depending on the user services requirements. This work aims to measure the effect of VPN on the performance of a network. Four approaches are implements: Network design without using VPN, network design using VPN with centralized servers, network design using VPN with distributed servers, and network design using server load balance.The OPNET and BOSON   simulation results show higher response time for packet transmission due to effect of VPN tunneling. The concurrent activation of application execution is used as a solution to the delay problem of the initial timing period while the application proceeds. The results dealing with QoS are E-mail, FTP, voice services traffic and IP traffic dropped. The VPN Tunnels is in the range of (0.01 to 0.02) sec.; along with this simulator there are four VPN tunnels in the network. Also, a special server’s load balance is used to manage distribution of the server processing load across all other network servers to achieve the best response

The first is the previous Theological college building of Al al-Bayt University of the 1920s, now the College of education for girls, and the second is the 19th century Ottoman Al-Qishla building. The study relies on conducting a questionnaire for the occupants about their response to design characteristics of each building. The questionnaire concluded that the design characteristics of the heritage building have a significant impact on the psychological response of its occupants. The majority of respondents indicated that characteristics such as clarity of function, clarity of elements, sense of security, privacy, and flexibility, were satisfactory. The majority of respondents expressed appreciation for heritage buildings, as well as positive evaluations and appreciation for the reflection of the past in these buildings, indicating that “architectural characteristics of the heritage building” has a significant impact on the psychological connection felt by the occupants of the heritage building.

Abstract

This research submits theoretical and experimental realization of shear behavior of RC I-beams with polypropylene fiber with different volume fraction of plastic fiber as additive. The enhance of the sustainability of structural elements through the development of its mechanical performance by adding new materials such as plastic raw materials has become more important in the current period , particularly I- beams that was used in the long spans structure to become more environmentally-friendly. Seven specimens were tested in this study and only the amount of fiber volume fraction was varied. Experimental results showed that the ultimate strengths are increased in range (4.4% to 35.27%) that of control IB-1 for the tested beams containing Polypropylene Fiber Reinforced Concrete (PPFRC) with varied amount percentage of fiber material. Crack arrest mechanism of polypropylene fibers, and compressive strength of concrete increased in range (7.42% to 29.3%) that of plain concrete, and improved the tensile response in range (8.36% to 92.7%) that of plain concrete, limited crack propagation. So, improved behavior was obtained._x000D_ ANSYS 11, Finite Element models software are used to emulate two tested I-beams. 3D - nonlinear solid elements was utilized to model the concrete, while, the steel reinforcement was demonstrated by spar element. It was found that the general practices of the FE models demonstrated acceptable concurrence with perceptions and information from the experimental tests.

Abstract

Cancer is a disease caused by uncontrollable cell growth and division. Surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and hormonotherapy are all cancer treatment options. In addition to noninvasive cancer ablative therapy. As an example, ultrasonic therapy, even with low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) or high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU), and Laser therapy (photo-biomodulation therapy) in low-level laser therapy (LLLT) with different wavelength ranges from ultraviolet (UV), visible and infrared (IR) that all have demonstrated different results depending on the target of treatment so previous trials therapies are being studied. This paper reviews recent studies on the in vitro treatment effect of ultrasound therapy and laser therapy on normal and cancerous cell lines with specific parameters. The effect of ultrasound results showed a decrease in cell proliferation and an increase in apoptosis in different types of cells, depending especially on sound intensity, known as Special Peak Temporal Average Intensity (ISPTA). While the laser effect is noticed on cell viability, either enhance or inhibit their viability depending upon the dose of exposure and other specific parameters like wavelength, energy density, and power density used in each treatment protocol. The previous studies conclude that each response would have a treatment method with specific parameters, even an increase or decrease in cell viability. Further studies need to be applying these methods in vivo.

Abstract

This work describes seam welding process using dissimilar ferrous metals by pulsed Nd:YAG. The main objective of this work is to achieve the best welding conditions. This imposes careful selection for the welding parameters and inevitably the well design of experiment (DOE). Sheets of ASTM A240/316L stainless steel to ASTM A570/Gr30 carbon steel all of 0.5 mm in thickness were lap welded. Different pulse energies or the related peak power, pulse duration, pulse repetition rate, and welding speeds were used. Moreover, different welding speeds were controlled by the employed manipulator. The laser beam spot diameter and the standoff distance were fixed. Experimental results are supported by the computational 2D and 3D models. In this article response surface methodology (RSM) was applied to design the experiment and obtain the best parameters through a set of mathematical models that define the weld characteristics. The results show that the best joint in term of joint strength is obtained at 31.9 J pulse energy (related to 5.5 kW peak power and 5.8 ms pulse duration), power density of 1.43×106 W/cm2, 1.5 Hz pulse repetition rate, and 0.5 mm/s welding speed.

Abstract

The behaviour of slabs under impact loading differs significantly from that observed under short-term or long-term static loading conditions. Such dynamic loading scenarios typically arise from vehicular collisions, explosive events, or other forms of sudden impact. This paper aims to synthesise and critically evaluate the extant literature concerning the response of slabs subjected to impact loading. The investigation encompasses an analysis of the salient factors influencing slab behaviour, elucidation of failure mechanisms, examination of methodologies for simulating impact loading, and a critical appraisal of pertinent design code recommendations. Through this comprehensive review, it has been ascertained that reinforcement configuration plays a pivotal role in augmenting the resistance of slabs to impact loading. Furthermore, the predominant mode of failure observed in such scenarios is punching shear. This finding underscores the necessity for meticulous consideration of shear capacity in the design of impact-resistant slab structures.

Abstract

Welding residual stress has influences on fatigue, fracture, and corrosion. It is therefore important to explore the welding factors effect on the residual stresses. In this work, four welding factors (current, arc voltage, welding travel speed and included angle) were used to weld low carbon steel (ASTM A516 Grade 60).The experiments included welding of (60) pieces with dimensions of (300 x 150) mm and 10 mm thickness that were conducted based on the design matrix founded by using design of experiment (DOE) software (DESIGN EXPERT 10) with response surface methodology (RSM) technique. The X-Ray diffraction (XRD) method was used to measure the residual stress, which was then modeled and optimized in terms of the welding factors using (RSM) technique. The data showed that the welding travel speed and arc voltage have a significant influence on the residual stress. It was found that the optimum solution for minimum residual stress was at 450 Amp welding current, 34 volt arc voltage, 38 cpm welding speed, and 60? included angle. Where, the optimum value of residual stress was (-88.4 MPa). Finally, the predicted and experimental results of residual stress were in agreement with a maximum error of 1.8%.

Abstract

The aim of this work is to optimize EPD variables (voltage, time, and focus) using alternating current through the Taguchi Design of Experiment (DOE). Coating Nano hydroxyapatite (Nano-HA) on a Ti6Al4V substrate depends on thickness and roughness, then characterization of a coating layer to determine the optimum state. Hydroxyapatite (HAp) powder was deposited on a Ti-6Al-4V alloy substrate by electro-deposition with ethanol as a solvent under AC current, to improve the alloy surface quality based on coating thickness and maximum coating mass meeting the requirements of a biological orthopedics application. Ethanol was used as a solvent to precipitate ketazone and HAp on the base alloy. Taguchi's approach was used in order to determine the optimal conditions for EPD and subsequently to apply various criteria for depositing the biochemical coating. The surface and cross-section composition of the paint is described by characterization. Numerous tests and inspections; Zeta, XRD and SEM stability test, water contact angle and optical microscopes were used to describe the surface morphology of the HAp layer. The value of the optimum conditions for deposition of the HAp layer which is a simultaneous thickness and maximum coating mass, was predicted at a sedimentation voltage of 40 V, 2 min sedimentation time and 1 g / L for the concentration of the suspended solution at room temperature. The validity of the model resulting from the response surface methodology was assessed by comparing the expected results with the experimental results. In addition, close agreement was observed between the experimental results and the expected results. For the solution at room temperature, the results obtained with the highest value of the coating thickness of 41at the surface roughness of 0.94 and the contact angle of the alloy before coating is 67.489º reduced to. 38.132º after plating, which indicates an increase in the harmony of the metal implant and biocompatibility.

Abstract

Structural elements. This means the structural behavior can be quantified by considering the behavior of each structural element in each load path. Concrete is a material known for its great strength. Regardless, there are a few weaknesses, which must be taken in consideration in the design of concrete structural elements. Basically, concrete is made of three main ingredients: Portland cement, water, and aggregates (sand and stone).In order to improve tensile strength and ductility (capacity to stretch and deform prior to failure) in concrete, so this paper discus some types of concrete and record the effect on beams. Reactive powder concrete (RPC) is an actual concrete mixture, it is a special type of concrete because mix concrete (coarse and fine aggregate ) replaced by fine sand size (150-400)µm. In the experimental comparison the mechanical properties( compressive , splitting tensile and flexural )strength of plain RPC and high and normal strength concrete. Each set consisted of (4) cubes of (100×100×100_mm, (8) cylinder of (150×300mm) and (4) prism of (100x100x500) mm and consisted of (4) beam of (1000×100×400)mm. The results shown that the maximum compressive strength is 107 MPa and the maximum splitting tensile 9 MPa of RPC comparison high and normal strength concrete. The result of the second part shown increased RPC reinforced concrete the firstcrack288 MPa and ultimate crack 380MPa comparison high and normal strength concrete and the mode of failure of RPC (flexural-shear).

Abstract

Biodiesel produced from vegetable oils is a good alternative clean diesel. The present study was conducted because there are some variations or contradictions in literature on the use of CaO heterogeneous catalyst. In this study, biodiesel was produced from sunflower vegetable oil and methanol in presence of commercial calcium oxide catalyst in batch mechanical stirrer reactor. The effect of three operating conditions, methanol mole ratio (4-12), reaction time (0.5-2.5 h) and catalyst amount (2-10 %), on the yield of biodiesel was studied at constant reaction temperature of 60 oC. Response surface methodology (RSM) was used with central composite design (CCD) of experiments. Polynomial correlation was found for the dependent variable of the process (yield of biodiesel), satisfactorily predicted at 95% confidence level. The optimum yield biodiesel was about 98% and at operating condition of methanol ratio 10, reaction time 2 h and catalyst amount 8 %. The reaction time was found to be the most effective operating condition. Kinetics study of the process showed that first order reaction with triglyceride concentration and zero order with methanol concentration gave best fit with the experimental data, triglyceride with a reaction rate constant k= 1.53 h-1.

As a result of the tremendous development taking place in modern systems and technologies in the field of electronic monitoring. Intelligent monitoring, decision making, and automated response systems have become common subjects at this time, especially after the development of machines responsible for these processes. Traffic surveillance is a trend goal nowadays using different techniques and equipment. In this article, real-time Object detection and tracking techniques were proposed for traffic surveillance using image processing techniques. A state was specifically examined for its ability to detect and count passing motorcycles on a highway in a specific area. The results showed good reliability, with a frame processing time of approximately about (30 ms) and the achievement of real-time performance. The main contribution of this article is reaching the best result implemented by the performance the real-time process using image process technique and tracking the object by depending on the sequencing of frames and can stands with rationally not so powerful machines. Several tools have been used for different types of necessary tasks that will be part of the required application such as Python 3.7; which was used to build the basic algorithms,Visual studio code (VSC) as an Integrated Development Environment (IDE), and Anaconda navigator for downloading many useful libraries. The specifications of the used device were Intel(R) Core (TM) i7- 10750H CPU @ 2.60GHz 2.59 GHz, RAM 16.0 GB, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 GPU, 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor.

Abstract

The evaluation of the behavior of bridge piers with soils surrounding them during earthquakes became necessary in Iraq especially after the influential earthquakes hit middle and south of Iraq during the last few years. A three dimensional finite element model for the bridge substructure and soil surrounding the bored piles with the actual dimensions and actual properties corresponding to "Sheikh Sa'ad Bridge" in Sheikh Sa'ad district at Wasit Governorate 37km south east of Kut city is presented. The model loaded with earthquake ground motion applied as lateral forces at one side of piles cap. The Earthquake hit 11 km from Ali-Al Gharbee in Maysan Province in 2012 with a magnitude of ML = 4.9 is used as the input ground motion. The response of the pier was investigated and the performance of piles and the soil surrounding them was examined. Then these typical piers and surrounding soils were checked weather they can bear the stresses induced due to these earthquake forces. From this work, it was found that typical piers used in bridges in Iraq can sustain earthquakes up to those with a magnitude of ML = 6.8 maximum.

Abstract

This research is devoted to design and implement a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition system (SCADA) for monitoring and controlling the corrosion of a carbon steel pipe buried in soil. A smart technique equipped with a microcontroller, a collection of sensors and a communication system was applied to monitor and control the operation of an ICCP process for a carbon steel pipe. The integration of the built hardware, LabVIEW graphical programming and PC interface produces an effective SCADA system for two types of control namely: a Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) that supports a closed loop, and a traditional open loop control. Through this work, under environmental temperature of 30°C, an evaluation and comparison were done for two types of controls tested at low soil moisture (48%) and high soil moisture (80 %) to study the value of current, anode voltage, pipe to soil potential (PSP) and consumed power. The results show an decrease of 59.1% in consumed power when the moisture changes from the low to high level. It was reached that the closed loop controller PID is the best solution in terms of efficiency, reliability, fast response and power consumption.

Abstract

In this paper, the H-infinity Sliding Mode Control (HSMC) is designed to produce a new dynamic output feedback controller for trajectory tracking of the nonlinear human swing leg system. The human swing leg system represents the support of human leg or the humanoid robot leg which is usually modeled as a double pendulum. The thigh and shank of a human leg is represented by two pendulum links and the hip joint will connect the upper body to the thigh and the knee joint will connect the thigh to the shank. The external torques (servo motors) are applied at the hip and knee joints to move the muscles of thigh and shank. The results show that the HSMC can robustly stabilize the system and achieve a desirable time response specification better than if only H-infinity or SMC is used. This controller achieves the following specifications:  sec,  for hip joint and sec, for knee joint.

Abstract

In this paper, the robustness properties of sliding mode control (SMC) which is designed to produce a dynamic output feedback controller to achieve robustness for trajectory tracking of the nonlinear human swing leg system is presented. Abstract

In this paper, the derivation of  optimal control using state derivative feedback to obtain a new control approach is presented. A control approach similar to linear quadratic regulator (LQR) is applied to find the optimal gain matrices that achieve the desired performance. The effectiveness and robustness of the proposed controller can be shown using the uncertain and under-actuated overhead crane system. The results show that the proposed controller can robustly stabilize the system in the presence of system parameters uncertainty. Further, a more desirable time response specifications can be obtained using state derivative feedback  control in comparison to the state feedback  control.

Abstract

Shear walls are effective structural elements used mainly in multi-story buildings to provide resistance against lateral loadings such as earthquake and wind loadings. There are several types and shapes of shear walls depending mainly on geometry and height of the building. Both type and shape of the shear wall affect the efficiency of resisting lateral loadings. In this study, fifty six building models have been analyzed using the finite element method by using the SAP2000 V14 computer program. Each model have ten stories, subjected to earthquake loadings, with various numbers of bays, and with three types of shear walls, namely: side shear walls, middle shear core, and double shear cores, provided that each type of the shear walls (or cores) has the same material volume. The analysis outputs have been investigated to select the appropriate type and location of the shear walls (or cores) for the multi-story buildings subjected to earthquake loadings. Specified conclusions have been presented to obtain the optimum behavior for the multi-story buildings under the effects of earthquake loadings.

Abstract

In this paper, the design of a robust controller for two wheeled inverted pendulum (TWIP) system is presented. In the first stage of the design, a full state feedback H2 control is designed for stabilizing the inclination of (TWIP) system to upright position. The H? controller for the stabilized system is synthesized in the second stage. The mathematical model of the system based on the Newtonian approach is developed. The results verify that the proposed controller can compensate the system parameter uncertainty with a more desirable time response specifications.
