Go to Editorial ManagerAl2O3 is a major reinforcement in aluminum-based composites, which have been developing rapidly in recent years. The aim of this paper is to investigate the effect of alumina phases and amounts on the physical properties of fabricated Al-Al2O3 composite. Alpha micro and gamma nano of alumina with particle size of 30µm and 20 nm respectively reinforced aluminum matrix of 45 µm. The percentage of reinforcement material were in the range of (5, 10 and 15wt.%) fabricated by powder metallurgy technique. Specimens dimensions were a disc specimens with 11mm diameter and 5 mm thickness. The green density was achieved under compaction pressure of 500MPa, and then sintered under pressure less sintering at 500ºC in a vacuumed tube furnace for two hours Physical properties of the composite samples have been studied such as relative density, sintered density, porosity, microstructure characteristics, particles distribution, agglomeration, grain sizes and granularity accumulation distribution. It has been noticed that at the micro alumina phase, its relative densities are decreased when there is an increase in amount of micro alumina addition, on the contrary in case of nano composites, where the relative density are increasing along with the increase in nano alumina addition. At micro and nano composites, the produced relative densities are less than the pure aluminum relative density. Agglomeration are increasing with the increase in amount of reinforcement, while its more obvious with nano composite. Grain size reduced with the increase in amount of alumina in micro and nano composites, while, the obtained average grain size diameter is less in nano composite than in micro composites. It is obvious from the results that the variation in physical properties and microstructure of Al-Al2O3 composite are depends on both of alumina phases (size) and percentages. At 15wt.% of nano alumina higher relative density and lower porosity will be obtained.
Particles filled polymer composites started to be essential because of their wide applications in addition to reducing the cost of polymer, which is a main problem. The aim of this work is studying the insulation of particulate composites resulting from the addition of filler (glass or porcelain) waste powder to reinforced epoxy matrix. Samples with and without filler were exposed to some tests to decide the influence of the filler contents on the characteristics of epoxy. Epoxy is synthesized with filler particles having (90 micron) particle sizes as reinforcement. Composites of epoxy with varying percentage (0 to 40 weights %) of filler were prepared by using hand lay-up method. The nondestructive tests consist of thermal conductivity; ultrasonic test and water absorption test have been investigated. The composite showed an improvement in physical properties with the addition of filler according to their percentages. The result show the addition of the filler in all proportions to the epoxy increased the density of the composite, leading to the ultrasonic pulses velocity ranges between 2100 m/s and 2800 m/s. Increase glass and porcelain percentage cause increase in density which increases the acoustic impedance. While the thermal conductivity decrease with glass powder percentages in the composite increase, unlike the increase in porcelain percentage which causes an increase in thermal conductivity. The 40% percentage of glass in the epoxy had higher effect on reduce the thermal conductivity. As well as from the results the epoxy reinforced by porcelain powder would have lower water absorption than epoxy reinforced by glass powder.
In this study the friction stir lap welding was carried out by a new technique (diffusion bonding phenomenon) between (AA1100 and low carbon steel C10 sheets of 3mm and 1mm thickness respectively. These alloys have difference ranges in melting temperature and other physical properties. Different parameters were used: tool rotation speeds (630, 1250) rpm, travel speeds (80, 32) mm/min. and pin length (2.8,3) mm using cylindrical threaded pin. Many tests and inspections were performed such as tensile shear test and X-Ray diffraction tests. Microhardness and microstructure observations were conducted by using optical and SEM. The above tests were used to evaluate the weld quality and joint efficiency under different welding parameters. Best result for FSLW by diffusion phenomenon appear in (low carbon steelC10 / AA1100-H112) joint at 1250rpm in 32 mm/min. with 2.8mm pin length and the maximum tensile shear strength was (3.9)KN.It was found that the highest micro hardness was (138HV) at the interface between the low carbon steel and AA1100.
An experimental study on single bubble breakage in the stirred tank in oil as a continuous phase was carried out for a range of stirring speeds (220 to 430 rpm). The results are compared with bubble breakage in water that was conducted by Hasan et al. (2021) to investigate the effect of physical properties of continuous phase on the breakage rate. The breakage events in the impeller were captured and analyzed using a high speed camera. It was found that the breakage rate represented by breakage probability and a number of produced daughter bubbles (fragments) are directly proportional with the stirring speed. The breakage probability and number of produced daughter bubbles in oil was noticeably lower than that in water indicating the role the continuous phase viscosity plays in reducing the breakage rate.
Most of the soils suffered from significant geotechnical problems dependent on factors like the type of soil, soil composition and mineralogy. Specifically, the problems related to mechanical and physical properties of soils. Several studies have been used to mitigate the adverse effects of soils through using either additive conventional materials such as cement, lime or these soils blending with produced material and chemical materials. This paper focuses on stabilizing or improving different soils using sustainable materials. These materials provided environmental and economic benefits while mitigating a health hazard, storage problems, and a potential pollution source. They can be classified according to these sources into four groups: industrial waste (by-products), agriculture waste, domestic waste and mineral waste. According to the results of this review, compaction characteristics, California bearing ratio and unconfined compressive strength have been studied and discussed in this paper.
Improvements in the thermo-physical properties of Phase Change Materials (PCM) caused by nanoparticle dissipation are critical for a wide range of technologies. The current study describes numerically the investigation of the charging and discharging process of paraffin wax dispersed with different concentrations (1%, 3%, 5%, 7%, and 10% ) of Alumina nanoparticles (Al2O3), in a Single Thermal Energy Storage (STES) system. For this study, a time-dependent, two-dimensional simulation of the solidification and melting process was performed numerically for different velocities. The study is realized using the CFD ANSYS FLUENT software package (Version 18) that employs the phase-change phenomenon using the enthalpy technique. The results show that adding alumina nanoparticles to paraffin wax reduces the melting and solidification process, and raising nanoparticle concentration accelerated the melting and solidification process even more when compared to pure paraffin wax. The greatest improvement was obtained with the maximum concentration of nanoparticles with total time saving between (12% - 11.76% ) in the charging process and between ( 15.71% - 19.60% ) in the discharging process depending on velocity. Furthermore, other important findings were that the presence of nanoparticles makes a little effect in the early stages of the solidification and melting processes, but as time passes, the rate of solidification and melting rises. Comparison with previous works gave good agreement of about 34%.
Reclaimed (recycled) asphalt pavement (RAP), the most recycled material worldwide, is the mostly reclaimed material utilized in hot mix asphalt. Polymer (Crumb rubber) incorporation frequently leads to enhanced durability and resistance to heat cracking and rutting, two forms of permanent deformation. It also relieves stiffness and minimizes fatigue damage. This study aims to gather all previous RAP-related research and crumb rubber CR, so that the impact of using these materials on mechanical, physical properties of asphalt pavement, environmental effect and cost effective are clarify and explained. The finding of this research proved that the use of RAP and CR provide considerable structural and financial enhancements to the construction.
Rutting is the most common distress that most Iraqi asphalt pavements suffer from it. Asphalt binders are modified by using additives and polymers to enhance their physical qualities and fulfill the performance demands. Polyphosphoric acid (PPA) has been used in many countries to enhance the physical and mechanical characteristics of asphalt binders and mixtures that can improve the performance of asphalt pavements. In this paper, evaluation of the Iraqi asphalt binder and mixtures performance by using three percentages of Polyphosphoric acid (PPA) (0.4, 0.8, and 1.2) percent by asphalt binder weight and added to (60-70) penetration grade asphalt binder to show the applicability and suitability of using PPA in asphalt pavement in Iraq. Original asphalt binder and modified are subjected to traditional tests which are penetration, ductility, softening point, and viscosity. Results show better performance and enhancement of the physical properties of the modified binder. Other tests are Marshall Stability and wheel track tests. The results of the addition of PPA to the asphalt mixture show increases in the Marshall Stability and enhance the performance of the asphalt pavement mixtures. The wheel track test is applied to the original and modified mixture at two test temperatures 40 ?C and 50 ?C and the results show a decrease in the rut depth when the percentages of PPA increase. It is concluded that %PPA addition will enhance the performance of the Iraqi asphalt pavement and the mixture will be more rutting resistant, especially in high-temperature weather.
